Shopping away from the big Dep. Stores

Any suggestions on good places to go shopping away from the big stores. Different shops, maybe even nice markets.

Thanks

Shopping away from the big Dep. Stores

Canal Street is by far the best place in NYC for tourists to shop.

Just remember, you can bargain down the price, don%26#39;t take the first price quoted.

Also, DO NOT BUY ANY JEWELRY FROM ANYONE ON THE STREET (the shops are ok), IT IS NOT REAL GOLD OR DIAMONDS, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY TELL YOU.

Thanks BillHarley2004

I wouldn%26#39;t mind staying away from ';tourist'; places and get to the places new yorkers usually go. But thanks for your tip.

I agree with Bill. Canal Street and Bowery is at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge which goes from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The North side of Canal Street is Little Italy and the South Side is China Town. There are many jewelry stores on Canal Street as well as novelty shops, clothing stores and other very interesting things. Lots of street vendors. As Bill said, do not buy any jewelry from anyone on the street representing it as real, regardless of the price. You will get ripped off. Buy in the stores and remember they are willing to bargain. Most watches, Rolex, Movadas, Tag Hauer, Swatch are knockoffs and normally sell for about $10.00 Let me tell you a story. We were on Canal Street and asked the price of a watch. He told us $10.00. A couple of minutes later a couple of toursists came by and asked about the watch and was told $50.00. They asked if he would take $5.00 off and sell it to them for $45.00. He did. Most vendors are very astute at recognizing tourist, by their clothing and especially their shoes, and tend to up the price. Be careful. Do not play 3 card monti, 3 cards turned down and you have the pick a certain card. YOU WILL NOT WIN AT THIS GAME, regardless of what the person before you did. He is the shill and working with the dealer. If you like chinese food, there are lots of authentic chinese restaurants with 69 Bayard being our favorite. Don%26#39;t let the looks of these restaurants sway you, because the food in most of them is excellent. If you would prefer Italian food, there are many Italian Restaurants on the other side of canal. Casa Villa on the corner of Mulberry and Hester Street has excellent food and is reasonable in price. Most people like to stop in Ferrara Bakery for canolis. You will be able to buy knock off designer bags for a fraction of the price. They normally look very good and wear well. Enjoy yourself and have fun.

New Yorkers love Canal Street. You can always get a bargain there.

Thanks YAKSTER2000

I%26#39;ll definetely go there to have a look around and, after your suggestions, to grab a bite.

Thanks again

whoa...is this still the TA NYC forum?????

mir425, I don%26#39;t understand your question!

This is the NYC forum!

What forum do you think it is??

LOL....just thought I was lost for a minute there....not the usual opinions heard here

Read the threads from the Sticky FAQ about shopping--lots of good ideas there. I%26#39;ve pasted them below. If you put ';Canal Street'; in the search box, you%26#39;ll see lots of posts regarding it. Some people feel very strongly that you should avoid it at all costs, others recommend it.

Pipocavi, be aware that many people would not agree with the enthusiastic recommendation of Canal Street given above. Canal Street has shops that sell cheap purses, hats, jewelry, and similar items, along with illegal counterfeit copies of name-brand goods, but if you are looking for better quality, or other items, Canal Street is the last place you should go. You might try the shops along Broadway between Canal and Unioin Square, or Broadway north of Columbus Circle all through the Upper West Side. There are also shops that cater to the downtown office workers along Nassau Street and Broadway below City Hall. The Lower East Side has many shops for inexpensive clothing, and along Fifth Avenue between 48thg Street and Central Park, and along Madison Avenue north of 57th Street are many very elegant high-end designer shops and boutiques.
