Hotel Help

Coming to NYC May 23-27 with my husband as first-timers. We originally had a budget of around $250 per night; however, we%26#39;re having to lower that down a bit. Any suggestions for the best mid-priced hotel at around $200 per night. We%26#39;d really like to stay in Midtown and our original plans were for the Hilton New York...any suggestions for a similar hotel with a little bit less of a pricetag? Thanks for any help!

Look at the Hotel Newton.

The Newton Hotel is on the Upper West Side on Broadway and 95th Street. It gets good reviews, especially for value. It is in a safe residential neighborhood with close by shops and good moderately priced restaurants. It is one block from the subway which can get you to midtown in 10 minutes and most anywhere in Manhattan in 30 minutes.

There%26#39;s a special on the Beekman Tower hotel (near the UN) on travelzoo.com but the link isn%26#39;t working so you might have to phone them. It%26#39;s for $199 plus tax. (It%26#39;s showing an avg rate of $234/night plus tax on quikbook. Don%26#39;t know if that would help but I%26#39;d try phoning them.)

On quikbook, the NY Helmsley right across from Grand Central is avg. $214/night plus tax. It%26#39;s cancelable too so I would book that asap and keep looking if you want.

You could try bidding on Priceline and might get a 4* hotel for even less. If you don%26#39;t know about Priceline, read up on biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com

If it%26#39;s just the two of you, Hotwire and Priceline are options. Hotwire is showing some 3 and 3 1/2 star hotels for under $200/night, so you can probably find something through Priceline for around $200 inclusive.

You%26#39;ll want to study betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com if you%26#39;re not familiar with what%26#39;s what via the Hotwire and Priceline hotel sites.

Alternately you can serch your dates through kayak.com and quikbook.com, then check each hotel%26#39;s reviews here on TA. Travelzoo.com sometimes has specials as well, including some closer to your stay dates.

In my opinion staying near midtown is vastly overrated. The subway goes nearly everywhere, easily. I%26#39;d far rather stay UWS or LES within a block of the subway than midtown and 3 or 4 blocks from the nearest entrance.

Alright, so if we start looking at UWS or LES which hotels would you recommend in the $150-$200 price range?

Also, I think it%26#39;s the Doubletree Metropolitan that%26#39;s listed on Hotwire for $175.00...any thoughts on this hotel?

There are very few if any hotels that will be under $200 in May with private bath unless you bid on Priceline, find a deal on travelzoo or Hotwire or get a special offer direct from a hotel.

The Doubletree Metropolitan is fine but can be noisy since it%26#39;s near a police station. You do realize you can read reviews of all hotels here, yes? Just put the name in the box at the top left corner of the page. I see it%26#39;s about $196 plus tax on Orbitz or Cheaptickets but those I think require prepayment.

I did a search on Kayak and you can get a AAA rate of ~$166/night plus tax at the Best Western Seaport hotel or for closer to $200, at the nicer Hampton Inn Seaport. This would be a nice location in May and you could easily use the hop on/off tickets for the NYwatertaxi.com to get around for 2 days from there.

On the upper west side, all the hotels seem to be much above your budget (including the Newton) for those dates.

I would book something cancelable now (like the Doubletree or one of the Seaport hotels) and sign up for emails on sales from any hotel (like the Hilton) you like. Also keep an eye on travelzoo.com and maybe start trying bidding on Priceline.

You could also try some of the smaller b %26amp; b type places.

jacksbandb.com (upper west side)

chelsealodgesuites.com (chelsea, just south of midtown)

Yes, I know I can read all the reviews. I just like to get some local info from the experts in addition to the reviews. I was thinking that Priceline/Hotwire/Travelzoo might be our best option and it looks as if you all are verifying those thoughts. Thanks for all your help.
