Greenwich Village - walk- posted before but can't find it :(

Hello,

A few weeks ago I read a great post with a walk itinerary in The Village, and thought ';i%26#39;ll go back to that post cause it%26#39;s great'; %26gt; well, i should have saved it straight away cause now, even with the search box, I can%26#39;t find it :(

To make it short, the proposed 2 itineraries were the same but reverse way, because one of the poster lived at this other end of the Village.

Dunno if that%26#39;s make any sense but if you remember posting it or know where it is, a link would be great!

20 days to go for me! :-D

Thanks in advance

Praying that the death toll doesn%26#39;t rise..

NYC crane collapse kills 4 at East 51st and 2nd

Isn%26#39;t that right near The Pod Hotel? Is anyone from this forum staying here this weekend?

I have to say, I%26#39;m not surprised by this. There has been so much crummy constructing going up lately, with seemingly little oversight.

NYC crane collapse kills 4 at East 51st and 2nd

Just saw that on Yahoo news. I think its not far from where we had our fave breakfast at Ess a Bagel...terrible......we too hope the toll goes no higher, and hope for the best...

Just terrible. Hotels within a 2 block radius of this site are

Hoping no more serious injuries.

Let%26#39;s keep praying for those injured and worse.

It does seem (is it just me?) that construction accidents in the City are skyrocketing.

Between peope blowing up their townhouses, cranes and construction equipment collapsing, steam pipe explosions, etc, things are pretty crazy.

That said - still the safest large city in America to visit.

Let%26#39;s hope this doesn%26#39;t get any worse, and we start getting some better oversight on the rampant construction here.

A very sad weekend in NYC and Atlanta our prayers and thoughts go out to you all.

Radio City Music Hall

Would you recommend that I pre-book a tour before arriving in New York? Or is it easy to book on the same day?

Radio City Music Hall

I would wait - very easy to book in person.

Just go into the little shop (they sell RCMH souvenirs there) to the left of the front doors, to buy tickets. I think the tours are hourly, and you should have no trouble getting tickets on the same day.

Thanks for the link. They tell me I got them already ( I may have asked ages ago--but they never came, oh well--the one thing I could really use!!!)

Same here - they said only one offer per person when I clicked on the link, but I never received the first ones I requested!

I don%26#39;t have mine, but when I get them, I%26#39;ll probably store them in my TA travel ziplock bag - presuming the luggage tags are flat.

Thank you for your fast reply

There%26#39;s not really a dress code, but I would suggest you dress the way you would want someone to dress if he or she was visiting your home church on Easter Sunday. Hats are optional, but a simple dress would be good.

Do you want to have brunch near the church, or somewhere else?

NY Waterway tour / statue of liberty

Hi all, im thinking of booking a 90 minute NY waterway tour for me and gf when in NYC. Has anyone been on one and are they good. How close does it get to the statue of liberty and is there good photo oppurtunities. Also hope it does not sound like a silly qyestion but where is best to sit on the ferry for best views/ photo opps. Thanks all

NY Waterway tour / statue of liberty

I have not taken the tour so can%26#39;t comment on it, but if your primary interest is taking some photos of the Statue of Liberty, you might just want to take the Staten Island Ferry across to Staten Island and back. It goes very near the statue and also allows for some great views of the southern tip of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Verrazano Narrows bridge. And it%26#39;s free!

NY Waterway tour / statue of liberty

Oh, and if you do take the SI Ferry, you want to be on the west side of it (starboard on the way to SI, port on the way back). That%26#39;s closer to the Statue of Liberty. And that%26#39;s also every nautical term I know.

We did the 90 minute cruise in February and it was great. You get really close up to the Statue of Liberty and the boat pauses for a few minutes for you to take photos.

It doesn%26#39;t matter where you sit on the cruise, you are free to wander around!

  • Hotel at or near Times Square....any recommendations

Me and 2 friends want to stay at or near Times-Square the first weekend in December 2008. Any recommendations on a place to stay? Everything I%26#39;ve looked at is $600+ per night. Way out of our budget. Looking for something more like $300/night.

Don%26#39;t necessary have to stay at Times-Square though. Even perhaps near Central Park and museums.

    This is a great board!

Hotel at or near Times Square....any recommendations

Timing is everything. Early Dec. is very expensive and you%26#39;ve picked probably the single most expensive weekend of the year. Hotels that are normally $250/night will be $600 that weekend.

Looking on kayak.com the Comfort Inn Chelsea has a room with 3 single beds (something I didn%26#39;t think existed!) for $312/night plus tax. I think it%26#39;s cancelable (doublecheck). If so, I%26#39;d book it and keep looking. There are a number of new hotels that will open b/w now and then that might yield more options.

You might also consider coming a different weekend. If you come on the weekend before Xmas, something like the Residence Inn Times Square is $309 plus tax.

Hotel at or near Times Square....any recommendations

Thanks, I am seeing how much more expensive it is to come that weekend. I%26#39;ll have to start searching for November. I was hoping to take friends to see the City decorated for Xmas and they want to stay at Times Square.

Any suggestions on a better weekend to come?

    Thanks

The weekend before Xmas is what I suggested. Another good time to come is the first week in Jan. The city is much quieter, Xmas decorations are still up and hotels are much cheaper. The decorations come down the first weekend in Jan.

NYC is stitched together by its mass transit. Subways offer quick passage north and south at any time of the night or day.

You ask about Times Square. Why not take a hotel that is a train-ride away?

When working in person with visitors, I recommend one subway line in particular: the Broadway line. The N and R trains travel from the southern tip of Manhattan right up to Times Square directly under Broadway.

You might want the older hotels that clustered around Penn Station early in the 20th Century. They are older iwth less showy rooms, but adequate and not overly expensive. Consider this: The Marriott Marquis has a polished-stone 8th-floor lobby with an open ceiling, sushi bar, revolving rooftop restaurant and a Broadway theater within the hotel walls. Of course they charge high!

The older hotels from a time when people got off a train (Penn Station) and walked to the hotel are okay, if not ultramodern. GoogleMap the corner of 6th Avenue and 32nd Street, with expansion 5 blocks north and south, and key it for hotels. You%26#39;ll notice many, and probably none go for $600 a night.

Though, judging from many posts on here, you may want to avoid the Pennsylvania.

Radio City Apartments gets good reviews on here and has worked out the best value for us for our Oct. trip, check it out.

Dont know the prices for the weekend you want to go but last time we stayed at the Novotel Broadway which was perfect great location and lovely hotel were also going back to The Edison Hotel in August which was strps from times square and you couldnt fault the hotel

As NYWHIZZ says the 1st week in Dec is really expensive. I am visiting New York between 19th %26amp; 23rd Dec. I have managed to book into Jolly Madison Towers on Madison and 22nd street. Cost about 拢5oo for the 4 nights.

Jolly Madison is at 38th st %26amp; Madison (not 22nd). ;)

We are staying at the Super8 Times Square...has continental breakfast and free internet....rooms look decent in size compared to others I have seen...you can view pics of the hotel from travelers here on trip advisor....it is right in times square...just what we wanted since we will be doing a lot of things on Broadway at night, within walking distance....rooms look good for a budget, and if you don%26#39;t plan to spend time in the room...check it out...I got it for $199/night on www.super8.com

    D'arte Tratorria on 7th/57th

Any opinions on this restauarant? Thanks.

    D'arte Tratorria on 7th/57th

Trattoria dell%26#39;Arte, on Seventh Avenue is fine, certainly not fantastic. Its been around quite awhile, which says something. If you are in that neighborhood, or want to go pre or post-theatre, then it is a good choice. Otherwise, if you want great Italian food, there is better in NYC. If you do head there, however, they are famous for their antipasto bar (huge spread, including an option with much shellfish). They have a very good veal parmesan also and, I believe (if I remember correctly), some good thin crust pizzas. Other dishes I was decidedly less impressed with, though this was a number of years ago. The place gets very crowded and is a good option to take out of towners.

    Have fun.

    D'arte Tratorria on 7th/57th

    Thanks.

I go there pretty frequently for business lunches, and I think that%26#39;s pretty much the best (and maybe only) reason to go to Trattoria Dell%26#39;Arte. Their pasta is fine and the lobster salad is better than most, but it is nothing I would go out of my way for.

I%26#39;m crazy about their artichokes! But, as already noted, the place gets very crowded and is very noisy. It%26#39;s a good choice if you%26#39;re headed to Carnegie Hall, which is across the street. And it%26#39;s owned by the same group as Redeye Grill, which is next door and is a good seafood restaurant.

The veal CHOP parmigiana is huge and very very good and I love their pizza and the artichokes.

    Thanks nywiz and others.

Any Nice Places to Stay in Montauk with a Toddler?

My husband and I are trying to plan our family vacation for Montauk in mid-May. We%26#39;re looking for a relatively quiet, clean place near the beach. Ideally we%26#39;d like a room with a small kitchen area and maybe a separate living space.

We%26#39;ve been looking at Atlantic Terrace, Royal Atlantic North or East, and the Montauk Soundview. Does anyone have any experiences with these places? Or have any other suggestions?

Any Nice Places to Stay in Montauk with a Toddler?

I recommend Breakers Motel. We have been going there for years and we love how relaxed we feel when we stay there. The atmosphere is laid back and family-oriented. They have cabins and efficiencies which are clean and affordable. Every room has a deck and BBQ. They have a nice pool, great views and ping pong. It is quiet there and yet you can walk to town. It is a short walk down a path to the beach.

We stayed at Atlantic Terrace years ago. It is near Royal Atlantic and is located in town. You will not find the beach at either of these to be as quiet as the beach near the Breakers.

would like to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, then visit the Statten Island ferry, Ground Zero, point out Wall Street to kids (ages 12 and 13), point out Trinity Church and end up in Chinatown or Little Italy around lunch. How would you do this with a starting point of the Marriott Marquis and what is best mode of transportation, foot, subway, bus?

    Day 1 help

I gather from one of your other posts that you are walking over the bridge towards Manhattan. I believe it lets off somewhere near City Hall. Then, I%26#39;d walk through City Hall Park, take Vesey Street or Fulton St one block west, and you%26#39;ll be at the WTC. Near the south end of the WTC is Liberty Park, which is a little plaza, and you can walk back up to Broadway through there. Keep walking south on Broadway and after a couple blocks, the Trinity Church will be on your right and Wall Street will be on your left. Head down Wall Street, and the first place you%26#39;ll be able to turn right is Broad Street, which is where the front of the Exchange is (you%26#39;ll see a side entrance/exit on Wall St.). Either walk back up Wall Street or walk down to Exchange Place, make a right, and you%26#39;ll be back on Broadway. Keep walking south and you%26#39;ll see the bull. From there, you%26#39;ll be able to see Battery Park. The Staten Island Ferry terminal is to the far left of Battery Park. Broadway turns into State St. at the bull, and bears left-- you can follow that to get to the ferry terminal as well. Then I%26#39;d take the subway back up to Chinatown/Little Italy.

    Day 1 help

this is exactly what i was looking for thanks. we don%26#39;t mind walking, just want the most direct route possible.

if you start from marriott marquis midtown the best way is subway to downtown, you can ask there are various lines all going downtown, get off on broadway downtown and proceed to walk your way around. Bring comfortable shoes and have fun.

    regrds ely

Hopstop.com will help you with exact transit (and walking) instructions and maps.google.com is very good for getting you a map of your itinerary. By looking at it on a map, you might decide to change the order of your day. The things you list are a pretty full day when you include time to get to each. If you attempt both the bridge walk and the roundtrip Staten Island ferry ride and stops along the way, it will be well past lunch (imo).

I would consider doing the Staten Island ferry first then walking north to Bowling Green for the bull and continue walking to WTC site.

Depending on how long this takes, it could be lunch time and you can do the Brooklyn Bridge after lunch. (or go to Brooklyn and have lunch there).

If you already have your tickets, arriving at the theater at 7:30-7:40 should be fine. If you have to pick up the tix at the box office, allow yourself a bit more time. The restaurant is ~10 min. walk to the theater.

'Curtains' or 'Gypsy' on Broadway for kids

Traveling to NYC in July. Kids (11,13,14) have already seen Wicked. Too old for Lion King, Poppins, etc.. Are Curtains and Gypsy entertaining but understandable and toned down enough for kids this age?

'Curtains' or 'Gypsy' on Broadway for kids

Yes, they are. Gypsy, a show about a woman who becomes a stripper, is toned down and is a perfect show for small children. Curtains, a show about a murder, is also toned down.

Actually, I%26#39;m joking. They%26#39;re not. But since I%26#39;m not a Mormon and you probably are, only you can determine what subject matter is ok for an 11 year old. I don%26#39;t know what %26#39;toned down enough%26#39; means in a world where 10 year olds get Grand Theft Auto for Christmas.

'Curtains' or 'Gypsy' on Broadway for kids

How about Hairspray? I think it would be great for kids that age. It%26#39;s about high school kids, and has great songs, costumes, etc. Great for adults too.

Even if they%26#39;ve already seen the movie I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;d like it.

    Or Mama Mia?

There%26#39;s so many good options - Curtains is great, Gypsy would be awkward. They might really enjoy Xanadu and find it really funny. Even Phantom they might find cool.

I would not take my kids to these shows as they are not really geared toward a kid audience and may not be enjoyable to them. Instead I would look at Hairspray or Legally Blond. Please don%26#39;t count out Mary Poppins or Lion King. These are amazing Broadway shows. The scenery in Lion King is among the most memorable I have seen on Broadway, and I have been blessed to see dozens of Broadway shows. It is mesmerizing to both children and adults. As for Mary Poppins, this is the not the Disney Movie version. It follows the books more closely and has a slightly darker side which my kids (ages 10, 12 and 14) liked. My kids loved Wicked, Lion King and Mary Poppins, in that order. They liked Hairspray and Legally Blond. I loved Mamma Mia but have not yet taken my children. I probably could take them at their current ages but the theme, a young woman trying to figure out which of three men is her father so that he can participate in her wedding, was a bit mature for my kids (or rather me). The music is fun and the show is great but I just wasn%26#39;t ready to introduce my kids to it. You will have to decide that one.

For and irreverant comedy, my 12 year old son highly recommends Spamalot. Potty humor and slapstick jokes galore! Moms

I agree that Gypsy and Curtains are not shows that kids of that age will enjoy.

I also agree Legally Blonde and Hairspray are excellent choices, and you should be able to find discounts for both of these shows.

I do not think these shows are for that age group.

    How about Little Mermaid?

Mary Poppins was great, I think they would all love it, same with Hairspray.

Some good Off-Broadway shows for them would include Stomp %26amp; Jump.

I actually think they would enjoy Curtains. What kid doesn%26#39;t like a murder mystery story? It%26#39;s fun and the music%26#39;s not bad.

The Lion King is amazing on stage, though, don%26#39;t count that out.

Lion King and Mary Poppins are for kids of all ages. A revival of South Pacific has just started at Lincoln Center. Hairspray is a popular family show. The last 2 both deal with racial issues.

I think Gypsy is a classic and seeing Patti Lupone in it would be a life long remembrance. Rent the movie with Rosalind Russell %26amp; Natalie Wood and you decide whether you think your kids would like it.

I would think Gypsy is too long for kids. I remember watching the movie with Rosalind Russell when I was in my late teens and feeling like it was a LONG movie. However -I am going to see Gypsy on THursday so I am excited!!

Hairspray would be a good option - I saw it and its colorful and fun.

    jfk to maspeth

I can%26#39;t imagine why you%26#39;re staying here, but in answer to your questions.

Taxi or car service is the only way to get there from JFK. The taxi cost will be on the meter (ie no fixed fare). Website

    http://www.nyccabfare.com/

estimates the fare to be $42.10. If there%26#39;s heavy traffic, the fare could be more as the meter keeps going if you%26#39;re stopped in traffic. Don%26#39;t assume the driver will know the way. I%26#39;d suggest you go to maps.google.com and get directions, print them out and keep them with you. (double check on hotel website to compare) A regular taxi will fit 4 people with 1 sitting in the front with the driver. Some of the minivan cabs can accomodate 5. If you want to order a larger vehicle, dial7.com is a reputable car service.

The hotel is near no subway station and the nearest public transportation are bus stops more than 10 mins. away. It sounds like the hotel has a shuttle service to the subway a few times a day. They also have shuttle service to/from La Guardia. Unless you%26#39;re attending an event AT the hotel or visiting family nearby, I suggest you reconsider this hotel decision.

Church to go to in manhattan for tourists

    Hi everyone

I am going to NYC at the start of april %26#39;08 on holiday with my flatmate and we were thinking of trying out a church on sunday to see what it is like. Lively would be great

    Thank you

    Jonathan

Church to go to in manhattan for tourists

Hmm. Lively. All of our churches are open for tourists. That%26#39;s the nature of churches. However, if you want %26#39;lively%26#39; (not quite sure what that means- bingo during the service? Dancing priests?), you could go on one of the gospel tours. buynewyorktours.com/tours/鈥?/a>

As an ex-Catholic, I tend to find Masses pretty lively (stand up, sit down, kneel), but that%26#39;s just me. I%26#39;m not sure what you mean by %26#39;seeing what it%26#39;s like%26#39;- these are religious ceremonies, not entertainments. It would be rude to walk out or comment during the service if things are not to your taste. Likewise, you should dress appropriately out of respect for the congregations- no shorts, no baseball caps, no t-shirts with %26#39;funny%26#39; sayings.

Church to go to in manhattan for tourists

    Thank you for your reply

By %26#39;see what it is like%26#39; i meant, experience church in a different country as i live in scotland. I have no intention of leaving a service before it is over.

I plan to attend a protestant service

I%26#39;m sure churches in NYC welcome all - be they locals or tourists - if you are looking for a %26#39;lively%26#39; service perhaps a church that caters to black/Afro Americans, with a gospel choir would fit your needs.

Many if these are of the Protestant bent....

    Poppa

I agree - if you want ';lively';, go to a old-fashioned Black Baptist church in Harlem or Brooklyn. To read more, enter ';Harlem churches'; or ';gospel service'; or something similar in the search box. The Abyssinian is the most famous, and hence the most popular with tourists - and you can tell. They have a very strict line-up for visitors.

Go to a smaller one and the early service for smaller crowds and no or few tourists.

The Brooklyn Tabernacle in Brooklyn is a mult-cultural gospel church with a world famous choir. Very easy to get to by subway. If you go, you can eat at the original Junior%26#39;s and then walk to Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge. To read people%26#39;s experiences, enter ';Brooklyn Tabernacle'; in the search box.

You can sort by date if you wish.

I don%26#39;t know quite what you mean by lively, but three midtown Protestant churches with good sized, welcoming congregations and generally good music are St. Bartholomew%26#39;s, on Park Ave. near 50th Street, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, on Fifth and 55th, and Marble Collegiate Church, on Fifth Avenue and 29th Street. St. Bart%26#39;s is Episcopal (Anglican) and has really excellent music. In addition to their main Sunday service at 11, they have a more casual Sunday evening service at 7. FIfth Avenue Presbyterian is of course Presbyterian and of the three perhaps historically the closest to the Scottish church. Marble Collegiate was the church of the famed Dr. Norman Vincent Peale (author of ';The Power of POsitive Thinking';). The Collegiate church (there are a couple others in Manhattan) is what remains of the original Dutch church in New York.

As a long time fan of the Second Avenue Deli--even though I%26#39;ve yet to get to the new one--I say give it a try! Also, Artie%26#39;s in the UWS does great pastrami and corned beef sandwiches. Others like Katz%26#39;s and Carnegie.

Taxi / cab fares from JFK to Lexington Radisson?

Hi please could someone give me a rough idea of the cab fare from JFK to Lexington Radisson? Also will it be double fare on xmas eve? Help will be much appreciated.

    Regards, Claire :)

Taxi / cab fares from JFK to Lexington Radisson?

NYC taxis charge a flat fee of 45$ plus tolls (tip extra). This is the fare regulated by the NYC taxi commission, so they aren%26#39;t authorized to charge extra on holidays.

also- I doubt the majority of cab drivers celebrate Christmas ;)

Taxi / cab fares from JFK to Lexington Radisson?

Oh thats great thanks very much. Lol, i just thought that with our cab drivers charging double at xmas that they wud in NY too. Thanks for your help. Claire :)

As stated the taxi fare from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan is $45 flat fare plus $4 toll plus tip. Make sure you get an official yellow taxi out side of the terminal and do not accept rides from anyone else offering you one, usually inside the terminal.

    um... redundancy much? ;)

So what, he restated what you said with the caveat of not accepting a ride from non-regulated drivers.

That is a very important thing for tourists to know.

Thankyou all for your help :)

  • A 'Trip Report' from a Native

I%26#39;ve been needing a vacation, so I decided to do what people all over the world do- go to New York. Fortunately I live here all ready, so there was no airfare or hotel reservation. However, I decided to share my vacation itinerary with you all.

    Friday

I got off work at 8am and decided to treat the first hour like I was %26#39;traveling%26#39;. I went by subway to 8th St and Broadway and got a haircut (only $45) at Acme Barber School, went past my bank at Astor Place, and turned off my cell phone. First stop- St. Mark%26#39;s Place in the East Village. It was pretty quiet, so I went for breakfast at Veselka, a Ukrainian coffeeshop. I had the cheese blintz appetizer with applesauce and a glass of orange juice- yum. The place wasn%26#39;t crowded but I had fun watching the people- everyone from older men in business suits to young hipsters and middle-aged artists reading the Times. The meal cost about $10 including tip. Then I walked down 2nd Avenue two blocks and dropped in at Moishe%26#39;s Kosher Bakery to buy bagels and a kichel (a kind of flat, crispy sugar cookie) the size of my head.

What%26#39;s New York without shopping? By this time, Kim%26#39;s Video at 3rd Avenue and St. Mark%26#39;s was open, so I went to the second floor and went through the used dvd bins. I scored big- I bought Wallace and Gromit, and two discs from the Criterion Collection. Kim%26#39;s is nice because the store sells all kinds of movies that would be considered art-house. The same floor sells videos from different regions too, making it a perfect place for foreigners to shop. The first floor has an amazing music section. I also bought bacon from a Polish butcher shop at 2nd and St Mark%26#39;s.

Still buzzed from coffee, I walked back over to 2nd Avenue and up to 11th Street and stopped into DiRobertis Bakery. I always get a marzipan lamb there for my Easter table. They had been selling them pretty briskly, and I was lucky to snag one of the last three. I also bought an eclair- it was ok, but I prefer their cannolis and cassatine Sicilianas, which my boyfriend calls %26#39;sugar shock on a plate%26#39;.

I walked uptown some more and passed a mosque. This particular mosque is popular with cabdrivers, but it must not have been prayer time yet because I didn%26#39;t see tons of cabs. I remember this mosque from 9/11: neighbors of all backgrounds spontaneously went there and stood in front to protect worshippers from being harassed and stayed there until the police showed up and offered protection.

I passed a great thrift shop and a bunch of boutiques that were just opening up- the East Village is fairly sleepy before noon. I went up to 14th street and stopped in at a store called Knit New York to say hello to one of the managers (I crochet), then went west and stopped at Vanessa%26#39;s Dumplings for 2 sesame bun sandwiches with roast pork, a perfect meeting between China and Texas. Then I stopped in Trader Joe%26#39;s and picked up a sparkling wine.

I went home to my %26#39;hotel room%26#39; and had one sandwich, and later got into my jammies, took a nap, and ate the other one while watching one of my videos. The

    Saturday

I woke up at 7am and decided to snooze for a while longer. Then I got up and checked mail, while waiting for a deliery from %26#39;Fresh Direct%26#39;, a virtual supermarket. I had ordered gougeres (think cream puff shells with cheese), a roasted chicken from Rosa Mexicano with a mushroom risotto and spinach with garlic and creme caramel for dessert. Everything was ready for warming up later. After the food arrived I put it all away and took a nice hot bath.

I made breakfast- a bagel from the day before, a mimosa made from fresh-squeezed tangerine juice and my sparkling wine, some coffee and a boiled egg. I decided I wanted to do something different, so I opted to go to the Whitney for the Biennial, and then to the Neue Gallerie, while finishing up at the Metropolitan Museum.

I took the 4 train uptown but forgot the train didn%26#39;t stop at 77th for the Whitney. I got off at 86th and decided to go to the Met first. The place was packed! Not only was it Saturday, but the weather was good and it%26#39;s spring break for a lot of students. I saw tons of teens on tours (say that three times fast). As usual on a sunny day, people were sitting on the front steps of the museum (it%26#39;s a favored people-watching spot and meeting place). I went inside and checked my coat, and decided I wanted to see the Gustave Courbet exhibition, which was amazing. I particularly liked his nudes and self-portraits. I went to the Asian section and took in the Ming Scholar%26#39;s Garden, which is one of the most soothing places in the city, before going through the Japanese subsection (the table, desk and chairs by George Nakashima have to be seen to be believed).

Somehow I was ready for food again. I walked back up to 86th and 5th ti the Neue Gallerie, which opened in 2002 and specializes in German and Autrian art. The exhibition is on Gustav Klimt. I%26#39;d seen a few pieces by him before, but maybe the setting had been wrong- I hadn%26#39;t really %26#39;gotten%26#39; his work before. Before looking at the art though I wanted to have lunch in Cafe Sabarsky which serves Viennese-style food. Sabarsky was packed and had a line, but the charming woman at the information desk told me Cafe Fledermaus, the downstairs cafe, had the same food and no lines. I headed down there- it%26#39;s in the basement and didn%26#39;t have a view of the street or Central Park, but I didn%26#39;t care. The waiters were quite sexy and well-mannered, and I pretended I was in 1920%26#39;s Vienna as I had coffee with whipped cream (the Viennese love %26#39;schlag%26#39; with pretty much everything), spatzle with mushrooms, and linzertorte for dessert. I am now sorry that I had the torte, because I wil now never be able to eat what passes for linzertorte anywhere else except there and some cafe in Vienna. This was like a spice cake with raspberry jam, and I gobbled it. The meal cost $36 with tip, and it was a worthwhile indulgence.

I waddled to the elevator and went to see the Klimts. I am now in love. I do have to warn people though- if you don%26#39;t want to explain why all of those Viennese ladies have their hands between their legs while nakies, you might want to leave the kids at home. Klimt obviously loved naked women, especially naked women who liked to entertain themselves. He also loved Japanese art, which you can see from his painting called Adele I, on the second floor. I swanned around the museum, feeling very sophisticated and rather full. By the time I was ready to go it was too late for the Whitney, which I will have to do soon.

I came back by subway, after having a talk with a Norwegian on the train who was loving his visit to New York (the Met had overwhelmed him with its sheer size and quality- he thought it would take him 3-4 days just to see the basics). I am now waiting for my full tummy to empty out, and then I will have a late supper. Tomorrow I%26#39;m going out to Queens with a friend to In Spa World fr the day- $30 for a day of saunas, hot tubs and total luxury. then back to work again. Ah, well.

A 'Trip Report' from a Native

Good report with some great recommendations. After reading it, I once again am reminded that I must go to Cafe Sabarsky or Cafe Fledermaus.

A 'Trip Report' from a Native

The cafes are definitely worth it. Cafe Sabarsky also has cabaret nights- I hear those are quite good.

The great thing about New York City that I sadly see most tourists who come to this site ignoring is that New York is both a walking and food city with an incredible ethnic and class diversity. In two days I %26#39;spent time%26#39; in Slavic Europe (Ukrainian restaurant and Polish butcher), China (Scholar%26#39;s Garden), Japan, France (Gustave Courbet) and Austria (Gustav Klimt and Cafe Fledermaus). Going to In Spa World means traveling to South Korea (www.nyinspaworld.com).

I%26#39;m not saying that people shouldn%26#39;t see the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty- but if you spend your entire time looking at other tourists on double decker buses or hunting down fake handbags, you really haven%26#39;t gone to New York City. What you%26#39;ve gone to is a theme park that vaguely looks like New York but tastes and feels very little like the real thing. People tend to forget that New York is one of the most cosmopolitan cities on earth with an amazing vitality.

Oh, and that%26#39;s the wrong price for the haircut- it%26#39;s $5 dollars. Yes, FIVE. I keep my hair short and natural. The barbershop was fun too, because I got to talk to people while waiting for my haircut.

OMG, I%26#39;m so jealous! Your culinary and visually indulgent trip around Manhattan sounds like just the ticket... Yum, indeed.

    :)

A really great report with some ';insider'; tips. I love the Neue and Sabarsky%26#39;s. A few years ago, not many people knew about it but now it%26#39;s getting very crowded.

Thanks for the report. I am visualising everywhere you went. Only 2 more days and im off. The East village is on my list to explore this trip. Cant wait.

I think it is great to play ';tourist'; is one%26#39;s own city, and especially here, because there really is so much to see %26amp; do.

Thanks for an interesting %26amp; informative report

Just curious %26#39;cause your debut on TANYC has been filled with clamorous response - did you used to post here in the past as Ruffian or any other name?

A very interesting report...hhmmm.maybe some touristing in Uppsala wouldnt be a bad idea?

    Thanks for sharing.

msp, I hope you will post your report from inspaworld upon your return. I recently visited there and took a tour of this incredible facility. I plan to head up there for this full day of spa soon and can hardly wait.

  • What would you recommend?

2 adults and 2 children in New York mid April. Kids are 14 and 9, both boys. So far on our list we have the following to do:

    WTC site

    Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty

    ESB

    Rockefeller Centre

    Lower Tenement Museum

    Central Park on bikes

    Grand Central Station

    Brooklyn Bridge

    South Street Seaport

Also not sure whether to do Grayline ho/ho or just get Metrocard.

Where would you recommend that we eat?

    Any suggestions gratefully received

    What would you recommend?

Recommendations are always a matter of what you are interested in. You didn%26#39;t specify how long you are staying and that is always a factor.

Certainly try to group activities by location. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll spend much time at Rockefeller Centre and Grand Central Station and they are close to each other as is the Empire State Buidling.

You may want to go to the Central Park zoo. Brooklyn Heights should be over the Brooklyn Bridge where you get nice views of lower Manhattan. There are many nice restaurants and I like Miso Sushi there for Japanese and there is also a pizza place (I think Grimaldi%26#39;s) which has long lines.

Bella Cucina on 87th Lexington I recommend for Italian and you can get more ideas on www.menupages.com.

You can try to get Mets or Yankees baseball tickets that time of year if that interests you or see a Broadway or Off Broadway play.

The Comedy Cellar is a great comedy club in Greenwhich Village (a fun place to walk around) but I believe comedy clubs have age minimums. However if you get hold of Time Out New York Magazine they list some improv comedy shows which may not have age minimums and can be fun to.

Your children may like the Museum of Natural History or the Wax Museum but it is pricey to get in. The Metropolitan Musuem of Art (MMA )is by donation and there is also The Cloisters which is part of the MMA which has nice midieval architecture. You would take the A train to 190th Street and walk through Fort Tryon Park to get there.

Hope this helps and have a nice trip and let us know how it goes.

    What would you recommend?

I think your kids (and you) would benefit from a good guide book. If you just pop from one famous attraction to the next, you%26#39;ll miss the real treasure of the city, namely, its neighborhoods. Take time to explore what%26#39;s around the tourist sites to see how we live and work here.

See if you can find the ';City Wallks'; guide. It%26#39;s a box of cards that each tell about a specific area. They%26#39;ll help you explore without getting lost.

    And definitely get your metrocards!

We have two boys, 17 %26amp; 12, %26amp; going in early April.

We are planning to do a river cruise which I can%26#39;t see on your list.

Also we%26#39;re staying near Madison Square Gardens so have booked to see an ice hockey game there, which we%26#39;re looking forward to.

For our location the guide book strongly recommends eating at Cucina %26amp; Co in basement of Macy%26#39;s.

Here are some suggestions for places to eat with 14 and 9 year old boys. Please be advised that with the theme restaurants, the food may not be the best that you could get in NYC, the ';fun'; factor makes up for that.

When you go to the Tenement Museum, you might want to follow this walking tour to fill up on some good NYC food that I found on another website posted by RGR:

For the quintessential NYC deli experiences, no place beats Katz%26#39;s, on the corner of Houston (pronounced ';how-stun';) %26amp; Ludlow Sts. You%26#39;re there specifically for the pastrami sandwich. When you enter, you will be given a ticket. Instead of opting for table service, do what the ';natives'; do and get on line for counter service. When you reach the counter, put a $1 for each sandwich in the counterman%26#39;s tip cup and order pastrami on rye. He%26#39;ll give you a piece to taste. If you like it (the best pastrami is juicy and has some fat on it), tell him o.k., and he%26#39;ll make your sandwich, give you some sour pickles, and punch your ticket. Then, continue along the counter for sides 鈥?the cole slaw is good -- and drinks. Find seats at a table in the center of the room. (Tables along the wall have menus on them and are reserved for waiter service.) When you鈥檙e done, take your ticket to the cashier in front. It%26#39;s cash only. Note: For the purposes of this tour, unless you have a gargantuan appetite, it would be best to share one sandwich in order to leave room for more tastings along the way.

When you exit Katz鈥檚, turn left and continue along the same side of Houston St. You will come to Russ %26amp; Daughters, famous for all sorts of smoked fish and many other goodies. It%26#39;s not a restaurant, but they make sandwiches to go.

After leaving the Russes, continue west a couple of blocks until you reach Yonah Schimmel%26#39;s. Get a tasty potato knish, and make sure to ask them to heat it up.

Now it鈥檚 time for the quintessential NY drink 鈥?the egg cream. So, reverse yourself and head east on Houston until you come to Avenue A. Turn left, heading north, until you get to the block between 7th St. and St. Mark鈥檚 Place. Look for a hole-in-the-wall candy shop (no name, but an overhead sign says ';Belgian Waffles';), where one of the women behind the counter will make you a delicious chocolate egg cream.

When you鈥檙e finished licking your lips, go back to Houston St. and make a left (east) one block to Norfolk St. Turn right and walk down Norfolk until it ends at Grand St. Two places to look for at the corner of Grand and Norfolk: Kossar%26#39;s, for freshly baked bialys (another very NY food) and the Donut Plant (self-explanatory).

Next, walking west along Grand St., you will come to Orchard St. Turn right. At 87 Orchard, snack on a pickle from Gus%26#39;s World Famous Pickles. Then, continue to 97 Orchard, b/t Broome %26amp; Delancey, where you will find the Tenement Museum.

Finish up this gustatory adventure with a stop at Il Laboratorio del Gelato, at 95 Orchard.

I hope this helps and enjoy your stay!!

Grand Central Terminal offers wonderful free tours on Wednesdays and Fridays:

    grandcentralterminal.com/info/historictour.c鈥?/a>

(Scroll down past the info on the paid tours).

I cannot recommend visiting this landmark more highly - it is truly spectacular, and it%26#39;s history is amazing.

Thanks for your replys so far. We are in New York for 4 nights and 5 days. Grand Central Tour sounds great for 9 year old as he loves trains but the days are wrong unfortunately

Even if you can%26#39;t make the tour, do make it a point to visit Grand Central. There is a small transit museum there, with a great gift shop full of train related items.

Also, and this may sound a bit strange - if you happen to be on the Upper East Side near 96th and Park Avenue (perhaps after you bike in Central Park), this is where the commuter trains head underground (coming in from Upstate New York, Westchester County and Connecticut) so it may be kinda fun for him to watch the trains go back and forth - you can see them coming from miles away, and then they zoom underneath you into the tunnel. Just a thought.

If your 9-year old loves trains, then it is a no-brainer - skip the bus tour and get Metrocards. The NYC subway will be an awesome experience for the little rail fan.

I suggest that you see Aeros at the New Victory www.newvictory.org/show.m?showID=1028515 -- this is a kids/family theater, all seats are good, even the very cheap balcony seats. I havent%26#39;s seen Aeros before but the New Vic has many acrobatics type shows and kids love it.

Also check the family travel section for NYC at tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60763-s401/New-York-鈥?/a> for ideas

I forgot to mention 2 other things

    1. Get metrocards. You may also want to do the HoHo, but you must take the subway for the NY experience and your kids will enjoy it.

    2. I love the tenemant museum, but you really need to consider whether your kids will respond. The museum is by guided tour only and is very heavy on talk. One tour is aimed at kids, the ';Confino Living History Tour';

    Question on train travel

My hubby and I will be taking a train from DC to New York. Since we are from Texas, we need train information. The train says no checked baggage service. So, do we hold our large suitcases in our seats, is there anywhere to put them. Basically, what is the process for baggage on a train. Thanks!!

    Question on train travel

I travel from nyc to boston on amtrak and there are overhead storage bins or areas at the end of the car.

I only take an overnite bag not sure how big yours are from texas.

    regrds

    Question on train travel

We will be bringing two 42'; rolling suitcases - will there be enough room for these?

    Thanks!!

Can anyone tell me if we will have to carry our suitcases in our laps somehow?

    Thanks!

Not to worry, there should be plenty of room for you baggage. If you have any questions, simply as the conductor as you get on the train.

    Here%26#39;s Amtrak%26#39;s rules on baggage:

    www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer鈥?/a>

Although from what I%26#39;ve read it all depends on if you get an officous member of staff who will stick to the weight and size limits.

I%26#39;ll be doing the same as you next month but in the opposite direction :)

You%26#39;ll be fine. You may have to leave your bags at the entrance or in the aisle (off to the side) of the train car, but Amtrak can certainly accommodate whatever luggage you have.

    Thanks Ya%26#39;ll. And by the way, when I said 42'; - I meant 24';. No, I don%26#39;t have luggage 3.5 feet tall.

    Thanks again!!

Two 24'; suitcases will not be a problem.

San Fran Teen First Time in the Big Apple

We arrive Apr 1 and fly out the 5th. What to do with the intervening time? Katie is 15 and a HS freshman. She loves clothes (natch!), technology, and above all, music. Can you recommend venues or specific shows? Any good design shows or museums? Cool places to eat? Tours? What were the big hits for your kids in NYC? Thanks!

San Fran Teen First Time in the Big Apple

try to see a couple broadway musicals and or comedys.

Hairspray comes to mind for that age.

Tickets at tkts times square are half price same day for cash.

Shopping sightseeing can be done from rock center up to central park on the avenue and back down.

Also MAcys has a big shopping center on 34th st.

check ticketmaster for music concerts that week.

You can tour the lower harbor and out of south st seaport downtown which is enjoyable.

check javits center for what is in town might be technology show or other.

When we took our daughter to NYC when she was a teen, she liked the ESB (TOTR wasn%26#39;t open then but I%26#39;m sure she would have liked it). She also enjoyed having pizza at John%26#39;s on Bleecker Street and good deli food at the original Second Avenue Deli. Also, she enjoyed seeing plays on Broadway. Of course she loves clothes so we really had to restrain her LOL!

Have you asked her what she would like to do? Have her look at a good guidebook or look at the ';Things to do'; on the left-hand side of this page. This will help her come up with some good ideas. Our daughter also enjoyed her visit to AMNH (www.amnh.org).

we are so out of it that we dont know what the initials stand for - will look them up asap.

BTW, is there some sort of shuttle to Manhattan from JFK? We arrive around six.

thanks for all the tips. we are both very excited! Let me know if i can help you with San Fran. Cheers!

Do not take a shuttle from JFK to Manhattan. They are not reliable and will end up costing the same or more than a taxi. Taxi is $45 fixed fare for all passengers plus $4 toll plus tip to anywhere in Manhatttan.

Sorry! ESB=Empire State Building; TOTR=Top of the Rock; AMNH (I%26#39;m sure you looked at the link, but anyway..) American Museum of Natural History.

Lexington Avenue Spring Festival - worth going to

I found out on a website that the Lexington Avenue Spring Festival will be going on when we are in New York. Is it a great festival - or not that big of a deal? Thanks!!

    No big deal.

A month in Manhattan in July

A friend of mine would love to stay in Manhattan for one month, in July. What would be a decently priced form of accommodation? B%26amp;B or renting an apartment?

She is a lone woman, and around her forties and used to comfortable life, so I would imagine she does not want to stay in any kind of hell hole. And the area could be Soho, Greenwich village etc, and area where she can linger and enjoy her white wine and latte without the hustle and bustle of Time Square sort of tourist traps.

Any sort of information would be helpful.

A month in Manhattan in July

You should repost this question on the forum for New York City. This is the forum for New York State, which doesn%26#39;t have nearly as many readers.

In the interim, though, I%26#39;ll say that renting a nice studio apartment in SoHo or the Village for a month will probably cost somewhere around $2000. She might take a look at www.nyhabitat.com to get started.

  • Need help with subway

    Hi everyone.

I am traveling to New York on Sunday June 22nd for a cruise on the 23rd. I am getting tickets to Grease too. I need some help with the subway lines. I went to the website, but i cant figure it out. I am coming into the city on Greyhound so I will be at Port Authority. I know the trains leave from there. I am going to the Intercontinental Barclay on Easy 48th. Then I am going to the theater on West 47th. It says its about a mile.

So I need to know what line to take from Port Authority to my hotel and then to the theater.

Thanks so so much for any help.

    Need help with subway

You might want to check this map:

    http://www.brail.org/transit/nyc.html

You can zoom in and plot your location and where you want to go and the map will plot it out for you.

However, I assume that you will be carrying luggage for your cruise. If that%26#39;s the case, it would be easier just to take a cab.

    Need help with subway

Intercontinental is on park ave so take the shuttle to grand central subway directly below ground port authority to grand central on 42 nd street. From grand central it is 6 short blocks to 48th. It%26#39;s $ 2 for subway, but there is some walking invloved underground to get to the actual subway, it is very safe though.

I go this way every day to work it take about 20 minutes, it should take you less than an hour with luggage and steps.

From hotel to theatre is an easy walk across town fromeast side to west side through midtown broadway.

    again takes about 20 minutes.

Alt is take taxi, make sure you get picked up going westbound.

Ditto tax on cruise drop off from east side, most cruises leave from west side.

I%26#39;m not sure if you%26#39;re asking what kind of place to look for or a price.

Oakwood.com and furnishedquarters.com are 2 cos. that would have monthly apartment rentals. Whether they%26#39;d be in the areas you want, I don%26#39;t know. I would add the upper east or west sides as location options. She could probably find something privately perhaps from someone who%26#39;s traveling, but that%26#39;s a more complicated process to make sure it%26#39;s legitimate and legal. vrbo.com and craigslist.com are sites for that.

There are quite a few b %26amp; b%26#39;s that rent what are like apartments that might be available for a month at a time. But since they normally get at least $200/night on shorter length rentals, not sure this would be the most cost efficient. Some names

    Roosevelt Field Mall

    Hello,

best transport to and from Roosevelt Field Mall in

Garden City.....from the Hilton New York, please..

    Thanks

    Roosevelt Field Mall

For Monday....to avoid the crouds on the parade....

    Roosevelt Field Mall

Roosevelt Field is not the easiest mall to reach via public transportation. You would have to take a LIRR train from Penn Station to Mineola, then transfer to a bus. There are several bus lines that go from the train station to the mall. Go to mta.info and look at the Long Island bus map for details.

Unless you absolutely must go to that particular mall for some reason, you might want to consider visiting other malls that are easier to reach. Jersey Gardens, for example, is an easy bus ride from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Queens Center is a half hour subway ride away.

It%26#39;s because there is a bloomingdales store there.....the other one is in white plains....is that one easyiest too get to?..

    Thanks

Mineola is a main station on the LIRR with many trains to and from it on an hourly basis. There are also several cab companies that service the station and Roosevelt Field Mall is about 5 minutes away. If you have to go there, I would take the LIRR from Penn Station to Mineola and grab a cab. I%26#39;m sure the cab company will give you a phone number and you can call them for the return trip. Check out LIRR schedules on at line:

    http://mta.info/lirr/html/ttn/lirrtt.htm

I frequently park at Roosevelt Field and enter near Macys ( and the Apple Store) There always seem to be a line of cabs outside.

Note: Cabs on Long Island are NOT the same as cabs in NYC. They are all flat rate. Inquire before you get in.

Also, you wrote you are going becauses of Bloomingdales. Why not just go to Bloomies Flagship store in Manhattan. Roosevelt Field located in Nassau charges sales tax on clothes ( even if it is UNDER $110) Now I realize not many items in Bloomies are--but why not save on the few items that are.

I think that the White Plains mall MAY be closer to the train station than Roosevelt Field is to any train station. But you might consider going to the Mall at Short Hills in New Jersey. There is no sales tax on clothing in New Jersey (there will be on Long Island and in White Plains) and I think it%26#39;s a nicer mall. There%26#39;s also a Neiman Marcus there which is a very nice store. (There%26#39;s one in White Plains too). The Short Hills mall is directly across from a Hilton Hotel. Ask in the NY Hilton how to get there.

I agree with rdglady - go to the flagship store. It%26#39;s not on the parade route; it%26#39;s a few blocks away. Roosevelt Field is a long way out of the way just to avoid a crowd.

I also don%26#39;t think you need to leave the city b/c of the parade. But if you want to get out of the city, I%26#39;d go to Short Hills (or somewhere else in NJ) or White Plains before I%26#39;d go to Roosevelt Field.

There is no need to leave Manhattan on St. Patrick%26#39;s Day. Just stay away from the parade route (Fifth Avenue from 42 to 86 Streets). The main Bloomingdale%26#39;s in Manhattan has five times the merchandise of any of the branch stores.

    Thanks...

I went yesterday to the main Blomingdales in Manhattan and was imposible to walk....never mind shopping...I decided to rent a car and go to Short Hill and next day to Woodbury....we are serious shoppers...LOL

Continental Airlines - Manchester to Newark

Flying with Continental at 9:30am on Fri 11/04/08. According to the website the plane is an older 757 with TV screens overhead as opposed to on back of the seat. Youngest son is very disappointed but a friend of mine seems to think that the early flight on Continental has the TV%26#39;s in the back of the seat and is a 767. Can anybody shed light on this so I can try to avoid earache off my 9 year old?!?!

Continental Airlines - Manchester to Newark

As far as i know all continental planes from Manchester are 757 with the overhead TV screens, they only use the bigger planes on Long haul flights ( i know i thought Europe to the US was long haul, but i asked the steward on our flight, who told me its only on the US- Asian flights they use the 777 etc)the only thing i could suggest is for your son to bring a portable DVD player an a few DVD,S with him, to pass the time, I must say though that if you get the chance book your seats on the left hand side of the plane as the view of Manhattan on approach is brilliant, Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

Continental Airlines - Manchester to Newark

    According to this site: https:/鈥?/a>

the plane is a 757-200. Would suggest noise cancelling headphones!

I have flown with Continental out of LHR, MAN and BHX. Only the London flights have had the seat back TV%26#39;s when I have taken them.

We are flying into Newark from Orlando %26amp; out of Newark to Heathrow.

Comment above has made me think - is there a best side of plane to sit for views of Manhattan in %26amp; out?

    Thanks

We flew in to Newark and the view of Manhattan is on the left and on the Right hand side on the way out, its even better at night time!!

Does it not depend on which way the winds are on that day. I%26#39;ve been to Manchester a few times and the planes can come in from different directions?

it does i suppose, however its the chance you take.Did you sort out any thing for the young lad yet?

Will definitely do GCS but am tempted to stay on the buses. Wife and I did subway last time and had bad experience with a beggar so dont fancy repeating it with the kids. Will probably stay above ground but may just use the ordinary buses as opposed to ho/ho.

    private hire limo/ mini bus

Hi can anyone help me, I am traveling tonew york JFK in August 08 and staying in manhatten with my family (3 adults 2 children) we have never been there before and are looking at transport from the airport to our hotel and then back, there are lots of limo and private van hire companys advertising on the net, Can anyone advise me or recommend someone and also the going rate for this service, Also how many people/luggage does a yellow cab take? we dont travel lightleyand will be taken about 10 cases(2 each)Just looking at all my options thankyou.

    private hire limo/ mini bus

Three adults and 2 children cannot fit in a normal taxi, but if you tell the taxi dispatcher at JFK that you need a minivan or SUV taxi, you%26#39;ll get one of those, which should hold you all.

Incidentally, this is the forum for New York State. You will get more responses if you post on the forum for New York City.

  • Hampton Inn Manhattan-SoHo

We just booked a stay at the Hampton Inn - SoHo for the last part of June but are concerned because there is no information about the hotel, area, rooms, etc. I know it is in the SoHo District but still could be a ? area. They do not answer their phone yet. Can anyone tell me about this property. The Hampton central information said it is a new hotel.

    More information would be helpful.

    Thanks

    Hampton Inn Manhattan-SoHo

It is brand new and not yet completed being built. I would book a back-up cancelable reservation somewhere else in case it%26#39;s not open in time. It%26#39;s scheduled to open end of May last I looked. Generally when hotels have been delayed opening, they have to provide an alternative place for you to stay, but given June is a pricey month, I personally would feel safer booking something you pick that you can cancel.

    Hampton Inn Manhattan-SoHo

I was not able to find out much other than this hotel is still under constuction and is slated to open within the next couple of months. It is on Watts Street, off of 6th Avenue. The neighboorhood is great! 2 blocks from the A,C,E subway, which is a convienant line for tourists, will bring you right up to Times Square! Although they label themselves as being in SoHo, I don%26#39;t consider the area west of 6th Ave to be in SoHo, really the West Village. Anyway, you are steps away from SoHo, great (expensive)shopping, galleries and fantastic restaurants! You can do an Eart Google search for 6th Avenue and Watts Street, NY, NY to see where you will be. The hotel is min-block between 6th and Varick.

Enjoy, it will be great to stay in a new hotel (nice and clean) and in a great neighborhood!

    Thank you for the information.

    Parsons art classes

I took a continuing ed drawing class there last year and loved it. I can imagine few things more delightful than getting to spend the summer in New York taking art classes.

    Parsons art classes

Know lots of people who went there. Very good school and good reputation. Does she have housing?

Best place to stay for NYC Marathon?

    Hi

Looking for advice for somewhere to stay for 4 nights for the Marathon.

    Thanks

Best place to stay for NYC Marathon?

Have you looked at hotel availability for that weekend yet? And do you have a budget in mind?

Best place to stay for NYC Marathon?

Anywhere you can find a place that%26#39;s affordable. Seriously, hotel rooms get booked a year in advance. Most folks who have the money prefer to stay somewhere near the finish line (upper midtown or upper west side). If you need help, tell us your budget and your exact dates.

    Hi

Sorry I was a bit vague wasn%26#39;t I! I am planning to go from 31 Oct and go back on 4th Nov. I did want to stay not too far from the finish line and within a reasonable distance to get the bus to the start.

I am happy to pay up to about 拢1200 including taxes (which is about $2300 dollars I think!).

There are availability in a few hotels but wanted somewhere quite nice for the amount I am paying as it is a once in a lifetime trip for me.

    Thanks

The buses to the starting line are at the NY Public library 42 st %26amp; fifth ave. while the finish line is near 65 st. on the west side of Central Park. So it%26#39;s hard to be near both. ;)

6 Columbus is a new trendy hotel near Columbus Circle that wouldn%26#39;t be far from the finish line and would be a 10 min. walk to the library. The rooms are small there (they have a pod room that%26#39;s just big enough for the bed). A queen room (bigger than the pod) is $360/night on quikbook.com and fully cancelable. With tax (15%) it would be $1656 so well within your budget. A king room is $385 plus tax. (also on quikbook)

    Hi

Thank you for the advice, I had not come across 6 Columbus-great location. I am going with another couple and they are thinking of the Intercontinental Barclay as could get a room rate of 拢412 plus tax.

What is your opinion of that hotel compared to the Columbus?

    Thanks for all your help

The Intercontinental Barclay is a nice older classic NYC hotel. You should create a map for yourself (try maps.google.com) to see the relative distances. I don%26#39;t know if the price you quote is for the whole 4 nights or per night. Assuming it%26#39;s for 4 nights, it%26#39;s good value although there are a range of rooms there. Look at reviews and travelers photos here. (You do realize you can type any hotel name in the box at the upper left corner and find reviews, yes?)

The Barclay is not as good a location imo as 6 Columbus but more typical classic hotel.

AKA Suites Central Park is a somewhat under the radar place. It was another hotel, got renovated into very fancy apt. suites that were originally renting for very high prices. I now see it available on quikbook and elsewhere for decent prices. The location is not far from 6 Columbus and would be very good, more like serviced apartments.

The price for InterContinental is per night.

I am very tempted with 6 Columbus as reviews really good, only concern is size of room, but doubt I will be in it much.

    Will check out AKA Suites.

Appreciate all your help %26amp; advice

412 POUNDS????? Not possible. Dollars, maybe. The Michelangelo is very nice and on quikbook.com for I think less. I think it%26#39;s nicer and better location for you.

Thinking about 6 Columbus, what would worry me more than the size of the room (you could get the largest size, a king deluxe I think and prob. still be within your budget) is possible noise from other guests. It does tend to be a party place. One poster here, cricri7. had a problem her first stay there with a bachelor party on a Sat. night. That said, she liked it so much she just stayed there again (in a larger room).

Ritz Carlton, Central Park vs. Sofitel

OK, I know it%26#39;s not fair to really compare these two but it%26#39;s my turn to ask for help! I%26#39;m planning a romantic trip in November to NYC and had planned to book the Sofitel because of all the rave reviews here on Trip Advisor. It is our anniversary as well as my husband%26#39;s 50th birthday so I want it to be special. I recently found out that I have enough points to get our room at the Ritz Carlton so I%26#39;m considering this instead of the Sofitel. I want a beautiful, luxious, romantic room, great service...just something really really special and once in a lifetime. Is it the Sofitel or is it the Ritz? We could never afford the Ritz if it weren%26#39;t for these points.

Ritz Carlton, Central Park vs. Sofitel

Trip will be Nov. 21st through 25th, 2008.

Ritz Carlton, Central Park vs. Sofitel

go Ritz, bonus is thanksgiving day parade balloons are blown up in central park nite before thanksgiving.

    You%26#39;ll be right there.

Both websites are available I think ritz would better suit your needs this time.

    regards and happy anniversary. ely

I think really what you%26#39;re asking is whether it%26#39;s better to have a nicer room at a lesser hotel or a lesser room at a nicer hotel. The Ritz is a 5* hotel. Sofitel is 4*. I think you have to investigate what kind of room you%26#39;d get at the RC vs. what you%26#39;d get at the Sofitel. I%26#39;d also compare the London hotel which is all suites.

Oh I never thought of the Thanksgiving thing. That sounds wonderful but I hope they will still use our points during that time. I%26#39;d better check that out!

Yes, I%26#39;ll check the room comparisons too. Good thinking because I%26#39;ve never stayed at either so I%26#39;ll need to investigate.

Can anybody advise a good place for breakfast on Good Friday, we need to be close to The New York Helmsley which is on 212 East 42nd Street, can we reserve a table as we are on a tight schedule, this would need to be about 8.30am. Thank You.

    Breakfast

good friday will be light for regular traffic.

There are tons of starbucks coffee shops breakfast shops delis if you walk 1 or 2 blocks any direction.

Also grand central downstairs has multiple places open. They are all fast service ny style.

If you want to sit down or buffet style they might have something in helmsly, just tell em you are on tight time.

    regards,

    Breakfast

Thank you for your help, maybe we will go to Grand central.

BHAgirl, if you want a more sit-down restaurant breakfast, Pershing Square is right across the street from Grand Central and is known for their breakfast menu. I%26#39;m sure they take reservations there.

Another take-out option, across from Grand Central, is Cipriani%26#39;s - for breakfast with an Italian slant. And for a fast but eat-in option, there%26#39;s Au Bon Pain, on 3rd Avenue and 40th Street. This is a mostly self-serve place with pastries, rolls, oatmeal, etc, although you can order some hot food like eggs.

I believe the hotel also serves breakfast. Are you looking for some place nice or cheap and cheerful?

Good Friday is not a holiday, and the vast majority of NYC restaurants do not serve breakfast, so your options will be pretty limited if you%26#39;re looking for a sit-down sort of thing.

Semi Private Bathroom?? - Westside YMCA

    Hey guys,

Just searched the forum, read many reviews and even googled my question. Couldn%26#39;t find an answer but hoping someone here can help.

I%26#39;m staying in the Westside YMCA for 4 nights and I booked a private room with a semi-private bathroom. This was the most expensive room they had available.

My question is what does semi-private bathroom REALLY mean?

The cheaper rooms available said shared bathroom and I read that you share with up to 8 other rooms but I have not read what a semi-private bathroom is.

Semi Private Bathroom?? - Westside YMCA

I don%26#39;t know for sure, but my guess is you have your own toilet and sink (or toilet and shower) and share either the shower or the toilet down the hall. Why not ask them?

Semi Private Bathroom?? - Westside YMCA

I think it means that you will share a bath and shower with several people. I have done this on visits to the UK in my youth and it worked out OK for me. If the price works for you, give it a go.

If you look at photo on their website, you can see a single room with a bathroom inside it. You see a sink. I%26#39;m not sure if there%26#39;s a toilet or a shower in it.

    https://reservations.synxis.com/lbe/rez.aspx鈥?/a>

    Thanks for that NYWhiz.

I tried emailing a few times about different things but no reply.

I%26#39;ve booked already and don%26#39;t mind sharing a bathroom especially for this price and great location. I%26#39;m just curious.

    Thanks again

If you%26#39;d really like to know, you need to phone. Places like the YMCA often don%26#39;t return e-mails.

  • In New york city for 1 day and 1 night, what to do?

Hello, I will be flying into NYC Thursday and will have the afternoon and night free, and will be leaving on Friday at 9:45pm. Wanted to make the most of this short little trip. I will be in March 13th and 14th.

I have been to nyc before, went to chinatown, brooklyn bridge, empire state, statue of liberty and museums. What should I do?

Was thinking maybe a broadway show? So many to chose from, or anything else fun. Also what should I do during the day, where to eat for lunch and dinner?

    Thanks guys!

In New york city for 1 day and 1 night, what to do?

Thankfully you%26#39;ve gotten the ';attractions'; out of the way. I%26#39;d pick a couple of neighborhoods and just explore. And I%26#39;d absolutely go see a Broadway show.

I wouldn%26#39;t begin to recommend a show without knowing anything about you. I can tell you that the award-winning London production of Sondheim%26#39;s ';Sunday in the Park with George'; is opening tomorrow. You can read NY Times reviews online at www.nytimes.com -- it requires free registration. Then you can search their archives for reviews of everything on Broadway.

Before you buy tickets to anything, check with broadwaybox.com to see if there are any applicable discounts. And I find that it%26#39;s better to phone the ticket agent rather than buy online. You can also find seating plans on playbill.com.

In New york city for 1 day and 1 night, what to do?

I wanted to see Wicked, I was looking at tickets and dont know which is better at Gershwin Theater.

Hi. I%26#39;ve seen Wicked several times and I say definitely see it and also go closer. I like to see faces and you will be able to definitely be able to see the faces from there!

If you like to shop, head down to Century 21. It%26#39;s fun and depending on what you are looking for, it takes a while to visit every floor while you shop!

We just got back from there a couple of weeks ago and we enjoyed walking around Central Park near FAO Schwartz and the Plaza area. It was just beautiful and fun to look at everything.

nywhiz, the biking tour looks fun.

singingdancingmomma, I actually have 2nd row center orchestra tickets, which i was told by someone in another forum that its too close and will suffer neck pain. is that true?

Heck no! I love being up close. Some people like to be a little further back but I love it up there! I%26#39;s rather ';crane'; my neck a little and get to see their faces! I think you will LOVE IT! I%26#39;ve been 2nd row (partial view so I did miss a little big but I could see their faces SO WELL!) and 4th row center. I much preferred sitting center!

Also, if you have time and it%26#39;s something you really want to do, I have had really good luck walking up to get Letterman tickets. Just go to the website and it will tell you what time to come get in line at the Ed Sullivan theatre. Both times I tried this, I was picked for the audience. You have to be enthusiastic. Also, try to enter the date you want on the website form for tickets too. I also did that very last minute one time and was so surprised that they called me! Be prepared to answer a question about the show but it you watch regularly, that should be no problem!

Have fun! I%26#39;m so excited for you!

I%26#39;d go shoppind in SOHO and have lunch at Balthazar!

I actually ate at Balthazar 2 years ago when I went to New York for New years eve, very good place.

I want to get Letterman Tickets so bad, do you remember at what time standing in line for tickets ends?

I would hate to spend alot of time just standing in line, if it ends early then it wouldnt be that bad.

    Hi,

Here is the link for the online form. Try that first cause you never know what could happen.

THen, if they don%26#39;t call you ahead of time the website says come to the theatre between 9:30 and 12:30 on the day of the taping. I think we got there around 11:00 or 11:30 and most of the line was gone. It took less than 1 hour for us to do the process and then they said they would call us by 1or 2pm to tell us if we needed to come back later for the taping. Well, sure enough they did call us and we were chosen! It was very exciting. Then we had to go back a couple of hours later to find out where we would be sitting. THat is another line and process but definitely worth it. We were very perky and enthusiastic and ended up on the Front ROW! It definitely takes some time out of your day but I would say it%26#39;s definitely worth it. VERY FUN!

new york double decker bus tours are they good value

we are comin to nyc on 5 april and wondered what people think of the double decker tours .

new york double decker bus tours are they good value

I think they麓re great. We always try to go on a double decker tour in every new city we visit the first day or so. It麓s a great way to get an overview of the city and the sights, and at least the grey lines have superb guides that are a fountain of information and funny little stories, as well as they give you useful tips for how to get around the city :)

    I say go for it.

new york double decker bus tours are they good value

Yes. But taking a little time to understand the subways and walking might make your trip more a part of the wonderful neighborhoods of New York.

    Hey biker,

I think it%26#39;s great to do the double decker on the first full day you are there because it takes you around the Downtown Loop and you can get your bearings about where everything is. You can hop on and off all day so you are not just stuck sitting the whole time. It is a good value because you can literally use it all day hopping off and on. Then the rest of your trip (as the others suggested) take the subway and walk around the areas that you found on the tour that you want to spend more time in.

they are a good way to get overview if you haven%26#39;t been to town before.

Stay in midtown and downtown loops, go to other borough loops if you have extra time but not mandatory.

    good luck,

thank you all for your most welcome advice .i will be getting on that bus .thanks again .

I agree with Ely. Do downtown first and get your bearings and other choices as secondary. You will be amazed at how you will feel like a pro getting around in a very short amount of time.

I have a question about the traffic for the hoho..we will get into Manhattan around noon on thursday (this coming July). I know everyone says to do the hoho early in your trip, but my question is, would there be less traffic on Saturday and Sunday? Or should we do the bus on Friday and Saturday? I just didnt want to spend my time sitting in traffic if there would be a lot less traffic on the weekend..

We are taking a cruise out of Bayonne,so will get into Manhattan (staying in the TS area) late thursday night and will have all day Friday and then leave Saturday night for NJ. Then get back on Thursday and leave on Monday afternoon.

We want to get our tickets to Mama Mia soon, so Id like to plan my days. Thanks for any help! Dot

You make a good point. Especially on a summer weekend, there%26#39;s a lot less traffic on a Sat. and Fri. afternoons can be very bad traffic as many locals get off work early and head out of the city for the weekend. We advise people to do tours at the beginning of their stay to ';get the lay of the land'; but in your case, I agree Sat. would be better. You could also just take an overview night tour on Fri. night and keep your days free to wander. NYpartyshuttle.com does a night lights tour as do other cos.

Thank you so much for a quick response! Dot
