subway saftey

staying near msg this saturday how safe is the subway on sunday will be traveling with a 8 and 9 year old tia

subway saftey

The subway is very safe. You%26#39;ll see all kinds of people with kids riding. We even talked to a sweet little girl on the subway who had her brand new bike with her. Her dad so cute with her.

The subway is a wonderful educational experience as well. There will be times when you%26#39;ll be on there with many people of different ethnicities speaking all kinds of languages. Be sure to point out to your girls that NYC is the ultimate example of America being a melting pot. (can you tell I%26#39;m a middle school social studies teacher ??) Also, be sure to take in the subway art, tile work, sculptures, etc...and the many entertainers who frequent the stations and platforms.

Have a wonderful trip!

great thanks

The subway is safe all days, but Sundays (and Saturdays) are as the MTA puts it ';Alphabet Soup'; due to track maintenance. So, some lines only run Mon - Fri and the ones that run on the weekend skip stops, have shuttle buses to replace portions of subway lines that are closed and some trains run on lines that are not designated for that particular line (i.e.: the E line can run on the V line on the weekends). Just ask, ask, ask for assistance from us NYCers beside you to ensure you are on the train/line that will take you to where you want to go. If you hotel has internet access you can go to the http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/ site to see what train/line you need.

What do you mean ';how safe is the subway';? If you were planning on walking on the tracks, or riding while hanging on the outside of the cars, or touching the third rail, then you would find the subway dangerous. Of course, automobiles are dangerous too, if you plan on standing in the middle of the road.

Or were you talking about being afraid of crimes? If so, why would you think the subway has much crime at all? On any given day, including journeys taken at 3 o%26#39;clock in the morning and through the worst neighborhoods in the city, your chances of having your pocket picked on the subway are roughly one in one million, and your chances of being robbed are one in four million. Certainly, if you are from crime-ridden Virginia, the New York City subway is much safer than any shopping mall or movie theater or big box store in your own home state. But would you think I was nuts if I said to you ';I am considering going to your local Wal-Mart on Sunday -- how SAFE is that?';

Our two year old rides the subway almost every day. She actually has started to know the difference between the trains, based on our attitude. At our station, there are express trains and local trains. The local trains take longer to get to Midtown. One day a local train pulled in and I said to my daughter, ';We%26#39;re going to ride the R train.'; And she said, very seriously, ';No. F train.'; (That%26#39;s the express!)

She%26#39;s her father%26#39;s daughter because I grew up on the subway too! That%26#39;s just to say - there are many, many kids on the subway system.

Although kayeen%26#39;s comments about weekend service are technically correct, don%26#39;t worry about the service chnages. Most likely, they won%26#39;t affect you at all. I%26#39;m just concerned that your expectation will be that you%26#39;ll be confused and misdirected by service changes, but you won%26#39;t - it%26#39;s rarely an issue for where tourists are likely to go. What will confused you at first is the difference between a locan train and an express -- just ask someone, people are very helpful.

I have taken my kids (now 12 and 10) on the subway since they were in strollers, and I see other parents with their kids all the time. Your kids will enjoy it -- mine often refuse to sit down so they can experience the movement of the train while standing -- this unnerves me but the kids have a great time and have never fallen. Try getting on the first car sometime so you can look out the front window and watch the tunnels, kids like that too.

Re GreenWhiteBlue%26#39;s comments, he%26#39;s not the most tactful person on the boards but he gives good information. He%26#39;s a cop, btw, so you can believe his statistics. The subway is amazingly safe and clean, you%26#39;ll be very pleasantly surprised.

I agree that weekend service can be confusing. Considering that our subway system runs 24-7-365, it never closes, and so, they gotta do repairs and renovations some time.

Just this weekend, a friend%26#39;s niece got confused by the route changes very late at night (around 12:30 AM) coming back to Queens, and she finally got back at 2 AM.

Granted, it%26#39;s Queens, but it nicely demonstrates (a) weekend services changes can be confusing, and (b) a 22 year old suburban girl can figure it out and safely come home to her aunt at 2 AM.

Perhaps his answer is a bit curt because New york city regularly makes the top ten safest cities of the world list, and has been doing so for a decade now. This is also the safest major city in the US, and it%26#39;s been known for that for quite some time, too. There are also numerous pieces of info on this site reassuring people as to how safe the city is.

Imagine if you had to constantly deal with people from London, say, who assumed Scots walked around in kilts all the time and ate haggis every day, or drank whiskey daily to excess, even though there was plenty of evidence against these beliefs.

New York is NOT the criminal capital of America. It hasn%26#39;t even been close to that since the 1970s. that%26#39;s 30 years or more of having to reassure people. If it weren%26#39;t for that we aren%26#39;t forcing people to come here, and that these people are asking because they wanted to come of their own accord, I could understand it. But I don%26#39;t assume that Miami is full of drug dealers because of Miami Vice, or that people are constantly murdered in Vegas because of CSI. Meanwhile, the state of Virginia has a crystal meth problem, but I would never considering asking my friend there if it was safe to go shopping or church in Downtown Richmond. It would be ignorant and insulting.

Millions of tourists pass through the city of New York Every year and nothing happens to them. Millions of people ride the subway every day. If a person thought this city was dangerous, why not just stay home?

Before you mention the World Trade Center bombings, I know people who have lived in London and who would be insulted if I asked if I had to worry about being blown up by Irish terrorists while taking the Tube or shopping at Harrods. Yet London has had more bombings on a regular basis as New York, and people don%26#39;t make those assumptions. also, a lot of the crime questions regarding NYC seem to be about something else- namely, a concern that perhaps black people will hurt white travellers (see some ofthe questions about Harlem). Middle-class black people are no more violent on a regular basis than any other group of middle-class people. however, certain racist political commentators in the US foster the idea that all blacks and Latinos in the US are a menace, and undiscerning people who can%26#39;t seem to think for themselves often believe them.

If New York was as violent a place as some people seem to believe, the city would be a depopulated ghost town by now. And as for rudeness, we regularly get mentioned as one of the most polite cities on earth- but we do get testy at having to swallow constant insults.
