Italian Resturant near Time Square

We are going to New York for the first time in May and staying at Casablanca near Time Square? I would be so grateful if you could recommend a good Italian (pasta/pizza) in the area? It is for a special occasion. Also, would be most grateful for other tips of good eateries in the area?

Who does a good breakfast and brunch?

Any good American Diners or Steakhouses?

I am aware I come across as slightly food obsessed but its all got to be tried and tested...

Appreciate any help and comments, Thanks

Have you read this thread on Italian restaurants from the FAQ?

For special occasion Italian near Times Square, I would try Esca. Not too far of a walk from there are L%26#39;Impero and San Domenico, both of which would be very good choices as well.

You are very lucky, one of my favorite Italian restaurants in the city is located right at the Casablanca. Tony%26#39;s Di Napoli is a great restaurant that has been serving the city since 1959. All of the food is served family style which means when you order a chicken parmigiana, veal pizzaiola or sausage %26amp; pepers the serving is enough for 2-3 people.

I personally love this place, I would recommend making a reservation however as they can get busy, espeically before and after shows.

Their website is: http://www.tonysnyc.com/

if you were staying by Picadilly for any strange reason, would you feel you have to eat there every night? We have great mass transit and it runs all night...

most of our better restaurants are nowhere near Times Square. I would just check the link above for Italian restaurants that sound good - even if they%26#39;re not exactly near your hotel neighborhood... There are a lot of food obsessed people here and if you scroll back a few days you%26#39;ll see lots of good restaurant discussions.

Agree that TS is not generally the best location for great restaurants, but especially for a special occasion. How many people and what kind of place do you want? Romantic? Trendy?

Good breakfast near the Casablanca= Red Flame Coffee shop or Brooklyn Diner on 43 st. for basic. For something nicer, Gabay in the Sofitel or DB Bistro in the City Club, both on 44th st b/w 6th %26amp; 5th.

Menupages.com has lots of good info. There%26#39;s also a search engine for the forum where all these have been discussed a lot. ;) There%26#39;s also the FAQ with a whole section on food

No of course not, we def dont need to eat around TS every night, and we will most def be trying diff areas of NY as much as we can! Just thought that for one of the days ie departure or arrival that would be a good thing to stay local.

The ';specail day'; is for two people and Im thinking more Romantic then trendy (although trendy ideas are also welcome for the other nights!!). Nice atmosphere where you can talk, candles, intimate, that kind of thing. With good food! And this does not at all have to be near T.S.

Erminia is a lovely romantic Italian restaurant on the upper east side but it%26#39;s pricey, more formal and Northern Italian. A romantic pasta/pizza place in Greenwich Village is La Lanterna. There%26#39;s live jazz in the bar next door. Another upscale pizza place right near it is Otto.

Market Cafe is not far from your hotel and is an upscale type diner with pizza (lunch or dinner)

DB Bistro Moderne is a trendy sort of French bistro not far from your hotel.

Balthazar in Soho (where there%26#39;s good shopping) does breakfast daily and is very nice. They also have a very popular brunch on weekends but for that you must book.

I%26#39;ll reiterate my special occasion picks from above (Esca, L%26#39;Impero, San Domenico) and add the following, not near Times Square:

Bouley (French, West Broadway b/t Duane and Reade)

Chanterelle (French, Harrison and Hudson)

Danube (Austrian, Hudson b/t Duane and Reade)

Mas (American, Downing at Bedford)

Erminia (Italian, 83rd b/t 3rd and 2nd)

Scalini Fedeli (Italian, Duane b/t Hudson and Greenwich)

And of course, the favorite choice of TA: The River Cafe (American, Water and Old Fulton, Brooklyn)

Pack a jacket/blazer.

Tonys next door to Casblanca is fantastic food but not your spot for a romantic night out.

Most of the diners in NYC are American.

I like Keen%26#39;s steakhouse.

When you arrive in the City you will be amazed with the choices for dining - mind boggling.

And, By the way, it%26#39;s Times Square.

When in the Times Square area, I have always enjoyed Trattoria Trecolori for Italian, on 47th St, btwn 8th Ave %26amp; Bway.
