From Newburgh to NYC

This is a dead forum, so I%26#39;m hoping someone can help me out. :-/

The Skybus is now flying into Newburgh, so I quickly nabbed two $10 tickets for spring break (wk. of 4/7/08). So we are flying in and out of Newburgh, but want to stay a few nights in NYC. What is the best way to get there? Is there a bus that goes into NYC? We will stay in Newburgh one night - anything to do there? I saw that the Vanderbilt mansion is close by. Is it worth seeing?

Thanks!

Hi MI Mom,

I agree with your comment about this forum...I%26#39;ve got to go to Newburgh on business in a coupla weeks, and after reading the hotels reviews I%26#39;m pretty sure I wouldn%26#39;t stay overnight in Newburgh unless I had too!

But I am from the NY area, and I can tell you that if you cross over the Hudson River from Newburgh into Beacon, you can catch a train from Beacon that goes all the way to Grand Central Terminal, NYC. The web site for metro north railroad is http://www.mta.info/mnr/. (You can probably take a taxi from Newburgh to Beacon.) Check out maps - metro north railroad on the website for more info. It is also very likely that there are buses from Newburgh to NYC. I think the train is a better ride as the train travels along the hudson, which is very scenic - they don%26#39;t call it the mighty hudson river for nothing!

Sorry that is the only advice I can offer. I hope you have an awesome time in NY for spring break!!!

Julie,

Thanks for the info! Probably would be easier to fly into JFK, but wouldn%26#39;t be as cheap! :-p We%26#39;ll consider it an adventure to get into the city! :)

Thanks so much for your help!

You can take the ferry from Newburgh over to the train station. It is a nice ride across the Hudson and runs daily unless the ice blocks the river. There is also a bus that runs from the station on 17K south of the thruway entrance right to the station.

Hotels: There are many nice ones in the area.

You should check the Storm King Art Center (sculpture park) just south of Newburgh or Dia Beacon across the bridge if you are interested in art.

I%26#39;ve only driven though Newburgh but it%26#39;s downtown area looks pretty rough. One nice area is the Waterfront District; this is worth checking out.

The Vanderbilt mnnsion is worthwhile if you like opulent mansions and nice views of the river. FDR%26#39;s home is nearby as well as is Eleanor Roosevelt%26#39;s retreat so you could visit these as well.

We took justjulie2me%26#39;s advice and took the train down and that in and of itself was a wonderful part of the trip. We flew up on Skybus to Stewart Int in Newburgh which was pleasant flight. The airport staff was nice and helpful with getting us to the Leprecaun shuttle which will take you to the train station in Beacon (across the river) for only a $1!!! Definitely worth waiting for the shuttle as a cab will cost you about $22. The ride takes maybe 20-25 minutes and got us there with time to spare for getting our tickets at the kiosk for getting down to the city. On weekends a one way ticket into Grand Central cost $12? I believe, and during the week it was $15. The train ride itself last about 1 1/2 hours max and is a very pleasant ride along the Hudson River. Thanks to justjulie2me for the advice. It was a wonderful trip. We also stopped in Cold Spring on the return trip for dinner since we had read a post or two on here about how quaint it is. It is the town just south of Beacon, so we hopped off to check it out. Ended up having dinner at a lovely little Tuscan restaurant named Cathryn%26#39;s just off of Main Street. It was wonderful. I loved my alfredo dish and my wife%26#39;s entree was even better than mine. She had a chicken dish that was topped with some ungoldy good balsamic sauce, and the mashed potatoes that came with it were the best I have ever had. If you have the time, definitely stop off and check it out. A nice lady on the train also recommended the River View Cafe to us, but they were closed for painting. Hope this helps out some, and I hope Skybus keeps on selling $10 tickets!
