Recommendations for restaurants near Stanford Hotel

Hi

My 16-year old daughter and I will be coming to New York on 25 October for 4 nights. We are staying at the Stanford Hotel and was wondering if anyone could recommend some good nearby restaurants we could try out. We love Italian food, or a good steak, don%26#39;t really want pizza or burgers!!

I understand we are in walking distance of most of the main sights i.e. Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park, Maceys etc. Would like to get the ferry out across to Statue of Liberty - is that easy to get to from the Stanford? Also my daughter is very interested in vintage clothes, where would the best place be to try and buy some?

Sorry, another question - I really want to buy some shoes but am a US size 10-11. Managed to get loads of pairs in Florida but not sure of the best place to look for in NYC - can anyone help?

So many questions - sorry.

Recommendations for restaurants near Stanford Hotel

Your hotel is pretty much right in the middle of Koreatown, so if you like Korean food you just have to walk out the door. Some other suggestions not too far from there:

Artisanal (French, 32nd and Park)

Keens (Steakhouse, 36th b/t 5th and 6th)

I Trulli (Italian, 27th b/t Lexington and Park)

A Voce (Italian, 26th and Madison)

If you take a look at menupages.com, you can see menus, reviews, etc, and you can search by location. Also, you might want to check out this thread from the FAQ about the best Italian restaurants in town:

The ferries to the Statue of Liberty leave from Battery Park, at the southern tip of Manhattan. There are several subway lines that run near there and also have stops a short walk from your hotel: the 1, R, or W train would be closest to you.

Here%26#39;s a recent thread on vintage clothes shopping. It contains several suggestions as well as links to other threads on the subject:

Regarding the shoes, one place you might try is DSW. There is one on the south side of Union Square.

Thank you so much that is a very big help. Really looking forward to the trip as I was 13 when I last visited New York (many moons ago) so I am sure it has changed alot over the years. My daughter is beside herself with excitement.

Thanks once again.

Hi Lolly. The Stanford is closest to ESB, Macy%26#39;s %26amp; Penn Station. It%26#39;s a bit further to Times Square and further still to Central Park. While it is walkable to the south end of the park, you might also prefer to use some transportation. Here%26#39;s a link to the subway map

Your hotel is near where it says 34 st. Herald Square.

To visit the Statue of Liberty, you%26#39;d take the #1 subway to the last stop, South Ferry. You should be in one of the first cars on the train.

There%26#39;s a vintage clothing store right near your hotel called Cheap Jack%26#39;s (which according to a thread yesterday, is no longer cheap. ;) It%26#39;s on 31 st. just off Fifth ave. Here%26#39;s a link to yesterday%26#39;s thread with links to some previous threads.

I think a trip to Williamsburgh Brooklyn is worthwhile if she%26#39;s serious as there are several places there. NY Magazine just listed another place in Williamsburgh as a good spot for vintage dresses.

There are quite a few other posters with large feet who%26#39;ve had good success at DSW, a discount shoe chain. The closest to you would be in Union Square, a subway ride away. There%26#39;s also a chain called David Z which seems to carry sizes to 10. They have a store on 5th ave b/w 35-36 st. which is right near your hotel. Here%26#39;s their website

This place was mentioned in another thread that%26#39;s also near your hotel

Here;s a thread with a lot of other options

As for the dining question, we generally warn the area right around your hotel has somewhat limited options for good restaurants. There is a very good steakhouse called Keen%26#39;s not too far. Their prices are high (as are most good steakhouses) but they do have a pub menu in the front bar area that%26#39;s cheaper and the food is very good. For Italian, I%26#39;d head to another neighborhood (you don%26#39;t have to always eat near the hotel). There are a number of good places in the Times Square area (will you go to a show one night?) like Trattoria Trecolori, Maria Pia, Roberto Passon. Many people on the forum recommend Le Zie which is just south of your hotel in Chelsea or head to Greenwich Village. La Lanterna is a simple place with charm and live jazz.

For breakfast, the Cheyenne Diner isn%26#39;t far (as was featured in a Tropicana ad in the UK). Speedy%26#39;s deli is also supposed to be good. You%26#39;re also near ';little Korea'; on 32 st. Mandoo Bar is quite good.

Check menupages.com too. Your hotel is in the west 30%26#39;s.

Thank you so much for this detailed answer it it really helpful and I will check out all the links you have given me.

A bit worried about travelling on the subway (i.e. will not be sure if I am travelling in the right direction or not), but I have been assured that it is very easy to fathom and the maps are easy to follow.

Just know that we will have so much to cram in in such a short visit.

Thanks for your help.

LollyB

If you%26#39;re worried about the subway, be sure to take a look at this %26#39;Idiot%26#39;s Guide to the Subway,%26#39; put together by poster GWB:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k405666-鈥?/a>

Also, I don%26#39;t think we told you about hopstop.com which is a website to help you figure out how to get from point a to point b. It even gives options for bus vs. subway vs. walking and taxi.

You need to know whether you%26#39;re going uptown (north) or downtown (south). When you%26#39;re on the subway platform, it clearly says one or the other, usually on the poles.

Btw, A Voce that Crans mentioned is a good Italian and not too far from your hotel. I do think that you should do some exploring at night though, if you%26#39;re not going to the theater. Your daughter would like the village (Greenwich Village).

Hi NYWiz

Not sure if we%26#39;ll be going to the theatre or not but will definitely be out exploring at night. Really want to go to Greenwich Village as I remember it from my last trip there, especially the atmosphere.

I am sure we will not starve but also do want to look further afield for places to eat too. My daughter really wants to go to Times Square and go to the top of the Empire State Building.

Thanks so much for all your help.

LollyB

Another stupid question for Crans and NYWiz

Do the subways have the relevant numbers of the route showing at the entrance (i.e. #1 - South Ferry)

- just so that I know if I am entering the right station or not.

Thanks

LollyB

Yes, the subway entrances display the lines that you can access there. Some entrances will say ';Downtown'; (or ';Downtown and Brooklyn';) while others will say ';Uptown'; (or ';Uptown and Queens'; or ';Uptown and the Bronx';). If no direction is indicated on the entrance signs, that means that you can access both uptown and downtown trains there. If you are looking for an uptown train and the sign only says downtown, look across the street--the entrances to the train going the other way will be there.

OK thanks - so can I take it that South Ferry is ';Downtown'; rather than ';Uptown';. As you can guess I do not have the best sense of direction!!!

Ha Ha.

Many thanks

LollyB
