broadway in nyc

hi all. 4 of us ladies are planning to go to nyc in aug 08 to watch a broadway show. we are budget conscious. we%26#39;re looking for a decent place to stay. which hotels should we consider? the prices of hotels in the theater district are pretty steep. where%26#39;s the next best alternative.

thanks.

1. What is your idea of %26#39;decent%26#39;? Are you willing to share beds? do you want amenities like a continental breakfast? Does the hotel have to be in Manhattan?

2. How long will you be here, and what else do you intend to do? It%26#39;s usually best to stay in an area that is close to the activities you want to partake in, if you don%26#39;t know the city and are worried about traveling around.

3. New York City has a subway system that can get you anywhere pretty rapidly- usually within a half hour.

4. August is a time when hotel prices are not necessarily going to be cheap anywhere in New York. What is your %26#39;budget%26#39;? We have everything from youth hostels to bed and breakfasts to flophouses that have been converted into budget hotels. Without a number per person, the list of places for budget-minded travelers would take almost forever to list. Your age, desire for a certain level of comfort, and ability/willingness to get around are all factors in choosing a hotel.

If you look at the ';Hotels %26amp; Accommodations'; link on the lefthand side of the screen, you can sort hotels by area, price, and ratings. If you want to be in or near the Theater District, then choose ';Midtown'; as your neighborhood. You can also put in your exact dates and Tripadvisor will run a crawler across several hotel search engines to find what%26#39;s available then. You can read the reviews of the hotels that come up, and you can click ';check rates'; to see what those hotel search engines found. This will open several windows on your computer, but will give you a good sense of the prices you might pay.

There are lots of budget hotels in the Times Square area and August is generally a good time to find bargains. That said, a bargain here may not be what you had in mind. A room for 4 adults for under $350/night plus tax would be considered good value. If you are seniors, many of the chain hotels like Hilton, Marriott, Hampton Inn etc. will offer senior discounts. Look on kayak.com and quikbook.com for prices.

;) As others have said, you need to tell us how many rooms you want (1 or 2) and whether you%26#39;re willing to share beds. There are some hotels with 2 double beds in the room (occasionally 2 queens). Some of the roomiest if you do want 4 to a room are the Hampton Inn Times Square North and the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, both of which I think have 2 queen bedded rooms.

Radiocityapartments.com is one of the most popular budget hotels in the area and they have some 1 %26amp; 2 bedroom suites with a living room and kitchen that might work for you if they%26#39;re free.

The Salisbury is a bit further north toward Central Park and also has suites.

The Belevedere is another good budget hotel in that area with rooms with 2 double beds.

In the area around Penn station, just south of Times Square, there are a number of budget hotels including the Red Roof Inn, the Stanford, the Herald Square. I don%26#39;t love the area b/c it%26#39;s very commercial, but it%26#39;s near Macy%26#39;s and other good shopping and not too far from the theaters. If you plan on going to theater at night, keep in mind it%26#39;s hard to find a taxi when the theater gets out so there is a big benefit to staying within a walk.
