Paying in Euros in NY

Can somebody tell me if it is true what they said on CNN the other day that shops and department stores(what kind wasn%26#39;t mentioned) started accepting Euros as means of payment due to the really bad performance of the good old US dollar? Not that I%26#39;d care much about schlepping hundreds of Euros in cash (or any other currency) in my bag or pocket when you can use your credit card... Thanks for any info!

I haven%26#39;t heard anything about this.

Your card will get you more value than converted currency, since the electronic exchange rate is the bank rate, which is lower than the rate you can get at bureau de change. (Unless you have to pay high foreign transaction fees with your card company.)

While this may be true at a few shops foreign currency is not generally accepted here. And I bet if it is the exchange rate would be terrible.

There was a news story a couple of weeks ago about some small independent shops accepting Euros.

However, as mentioned by Crans and Al - this is not widespread in the City and the exchange rate would not be to the buyers advantage.

If you want to use cash, change your money or just use a CC or draw US currency from an ATM.

I think there was one wine shop and one antique shop reported to be accepting Euros.
