I am travelling to NYC for my daughters 16th birthday, will she be allowed into NY bars?

You feel it%26#39;s appropriate to bring your 16 year-old daughter to a bar? Maybe that%26#39;s the question you should answer. The drinking age in the US is 21.

Check out this discussion from not too long ago:

There was another thread regarding the legality of allowing children into bars and I believe it there is a restaurant attached, you are allowed to have your child with you at the bar....but of course not to drink....minimum age is 21.

In the bars I go to (LOL which ones are NOT included in that list) they have doormen who ID everyone and if not 21, no entry!

When I was in NY in November I saw a few children in bars up until around 7pm but they were sitting having meals with adults. I don%26#39;t honestly remember seeing one child in a bar after this time, so although it may be allowed by law it certainly isn%26#39;t the norm.

I was also discussing NY with a friend of mine last night who although she has visited the city 3 times has never been in a NY bar as her children were under 21 on these occaisions. The last time she went I know that they were 17 and 18 and still she didn%26#39;t consider taking them in. As the youngest is 21 next year she%26#39;s now looking forward to planning a fourth visit when she and her daughters can experience a different sort of nightlife that may involve the odd cocktail in a swanky bar :-)

Thank You

In general, while you may be able to bring her with you to a restaurant bar or even a hotel bar, it will not be possible to get her into any place where the main purpose is drinking! Most bars in NYC card everyone, regardless of age, or whether they%26#39;re drinking.

A 16 year old is allowed in a bar with her parents, but that being said, there are bars, and there are bars. If by ';bar'; you mean a pub that has the bar in front, tables in back, and full meals being served at those tables, it would not look at all odd to see children at the tables with their parents, since they are all there primarily for the purpose of eating. On the other hand, it would be VERY odd (even if the establishment permitted it, for most probably would not) to see anyone under age sitting on a bar stool at a bar that was not a restaurant, even if Mom and Dad are right there. What would be the point? ';Honey, mommy and daddy need some booze; you sit here quietly and watch us while we drink';? Any restaurant will serve you a cocktail at your table, and it isn%26#39;t necessary to be in a bar to do that. If you want to drink liquor without eating something, it would be very strange anywhere in the US to have your children in tow standing around as spectators as you did this.

We%26#39;ve taken our 15 year old son to many of the irish pubs in NYC with no problem. That said, we never ever try to sit at the bar and we always order a meal. I can highly recommend Molly%26#39;s for a great burger, a well poured pint, and wonderful atmosphere. Kennedy%26#39;s is also a great place. Live Bait, across from the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park is a bar in the front and a restaurant in the back. It has nice salads and my husband loves the fish sandwich there. I think if you stick to places that serve food with boothes or tables, you%26#39;ll be fine.

Have a great trip!

';Honey ..... be a good girl and do Mommy a favor and finish your pint of Guiness ..... and then maybe you can have some desert. You know there%26#39;s some thirsty kid in Ireland that would just love to drink your dark ale.';

I guess it all depends what you expect as normal.

Here in Oz legal drinking age is 18, in many European countries it is 16.

We discovered on last visit that restrictions can apply according to time. We had planned a final cocktail (with mocktail for the 16 year old) at the Marriott in Times Sq on our last night in NYC. Snow was predicted and we thought it would be pretty from up there.

As it turned out - no under 21s after (I think 7 but maybe 8), and the snow didn%26#39;t fall either.

Went to Carmines instead - no view but teen says mocktail was great, as was the atmosphere.

A simple rule of thumb:

Resturants with a bar - kids ok

Music venue = some allow 81+ some 21+ you have to check

stand alone bar (ie, no food) 21+

there are exceptions, but this will work for most places.
