What can I expect to pay for a faux designer purse in NYC? Are these transactions cash only? Is Chinatown the primary area for these items? And last, are they available on the main street or do you have to follow someone to a store located down the alley?

That said, Chinatown, yes, cash, yes.

But think about supporting less expensive local merchants and designers versus paying $40 for a faux Fendi that looks like, well, a faux.

And setting aside the faux bag issue, absolutely do not buy a fake Rolex/Perfume/Cologne...total rip-off..your watch will break within the week, and your ';CK'; perfume is probably made with extremely volitile and dangerous chemicals.

And while we%26#39;re at it, if you%26#39;re looking for cheap electronics, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT shop at the myriad electronics discounters throughout midtown. Their scams are too plentiful to list here, but stick with the stalwarts...J%26amp;R and B%26amp;H...they have the BEST prices, and you%26#39;ll be getting what you pay for.

If I were to ask where to by weed in Jackson or where to get the best prostitute in Biloxi, what would you say? This question is no different. You are asking, on a public site, how to best commit a crime. So if you want to support organized crime and terrorists, the least you can do is not solicit opinions on how to do it.

Sorry if I struck a nerve. If these items are faux, and not hot off a truck I would be interested in the product. I do not care if you need a microscope to detect it is faux. As far as I know we do not see faux weed here in Mississippi. You can get many faux look a like items at our local flea markets and it is not illegal.

Faux means fake. If you are talking about designs that look like a famous designer%26#39;s designs, that%26#39;s one thing. A Gucci that was not made by Gucci, that is a counterfeit, it%26#39;s illegal, and my original response stands

if they are claiming to be a Parda, Chanel, Dior,, whatever and they are not made by those designers, they are fake and therefore illegal. I personally hate them think you can tell they are fake a mile off they look cheap. Id rather save up and buy the real thing which is what I do.

Don%26#39;t buy this junk. It%26#39;s cheap. It looks cheap. And it supports very, very cheap labor. Better to carry a nice ';no name'; bag than a cheap copy bunch-a-junk knock off.

Didn%26#39;t Chinatown recently get busted? Is anything there still open?

CLW - Yes, many shops in Chinatown were busted last week, however, I%26#39;m sure the trade is back to where it was pre-bust.

Another note: Please don%26#39;t judge Chinatown purely based on these merchants...Chinatown is a fantastic place to visit - great restaurants and culture, which you%26#39;ll see particularly if you stay south of Canal Street.

Chinatown is one of my favorite neighborhoods - and that has nothing to do with knock-offs.

The thing that bothers me most about the fake bags and such is the picture in my head of a child being forced to make this stuff.

the knockoff bags are so easy to spot as fake. Do you think you can spot the difference between a $5000 car and a $50,000? The answer is a resonding YES! Same with luxury goods. Not only is the poor quality easy to spot but a lot of times the ';faux'; are made in colors or styles that the real designer items NEVER CAME in. And quite frankly, you can find cool, original items throughout NY and you are supporting smaller, independent designers and not contributing to global terrorism and slave labor.

Please would anybody be able to tell me if the shops will be closed this year on either good friday or easter sunday?

Also, are Top of the Rock/Rockefeller centre, ESB, SOL ferry etc.. all open over easter or do these places close?

All the tourist attractions will be open over Easter. Good Friday and Easter Monday aren%26#39;t public holidays as they are in some other countries.

New Year%26#39;s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are pretty much the only days on which New York closes down. New York is not a Christian city- we have plenty of residents who aren%26#39;t Christian and who like making money. In other parts of the world, you would have a problem, but not here. Expect early closings on some but not all stores.

I stayed there about 4 years ago and it was fine, good location and the rooms were clean.

Looking at the last 4 or 5 reviews it%26#39;s still ok, it%26#39;s a good base and that%26#39;s all you really need in New York.

I%26#39;ve been there a couple of times and found it perfectly fine. I think that maybe it%26#39;s only partially renovated and that the lesser reviews are probably from people that didn%26#39;t stay in the renovated rooms.

Well our friends booked yesterday for this hotel and we are booking tomorrow! We went to book the %26#39;Le Parker Meridian%26#39; but this was fully booked for New Year! So this hotel was recomended by the travel agent! As you said we will only be in the room for sleep and to wash soo am not too bothered about it jus got a shock when i did see the reviews!!

Is the location near all the shops?

You%26#39;re a 5/10 minute walk from the Empire State Building, another 10 mins to Times Square. You%26#39;re within easy walking distance to pretty much all the attractions and shops in midtown.

It%26#39;s not Le Parker Meridian but it%26#39;s an ok base for all your shopping or tourist needs.

I am taking my wife for her 50th. birthday for 5 nights in November. We need a nice hotel, economy flights are fine.

So looking at DIY or with a tour operator. I have done DIY loads of times elsewhere, so no problem with that.

Anybody got any recommendations on what to do? and where to get the best deals from?

Check Expedia and also check booking separately. Expedia is usually good and cheap but sometimes to get the best price the flights and/or the hotels are not the best. Not sure what you mean by ';economy flights';. Kayak.com is a good website to check for separate air and hotel. If your dates are flexible, kayak should have a chart telling you which days of the month are cheapest to fly. farecompare.com is another good site.

I always find that DIY is best for New York.

As Whiz says - expedia and kayak.co.uk are good places to search for flights.

Also, check out BA, Delta and Contintental%26#39;s own sites. They all fly from Manc to New York, and often have sales. You really shouldn%26#39;t be needing to pay more than 拢275 each for flights out of season. You can get them cheaper than that as well.

I know economy=coach but since most everyone flies that way, I thought there was some other meaning. ;)

I personally HATE having to make a stop or change planes when there are non-stop flights available. Before doing that, I%26#39;d rather take the train to London or elsewhere to get a nonstop flight. Invariably the luggage never makes the connection and the money you saved by taking the slow boat winds up being spent on buying new stuff until your bag reappears. I still remember the mess Ange had flying Air France (or as she calls it Air Chance)thru Paris.

Get a nonstop flight if you can.

yeah, I%26#39;m not keen on stops. I%26#39;ll do %26#39;em if it has to be that way, but for various reasons, I don%26#39;t like %26#39;em. And as you say - baggagge, making connections etc. Don%26#39;t need the extra stress!

Anyway from Manc, there really isn%26#39;t reason to go for KLM and the like imo. Maybe a few years ago, but these days there are so many flights a week from Manchester to New York and Newark, that out of season, they all have deals on as they compete for passengers. KLM or Air France would have to be offering silly cheap flights for me to consider them.

I%26#39;m with kickice and whiz - with so many options from Manchester you%26#39;d be daft to make a stopover.

I%26#39;d be happy to take a train down there just to make a nonstop flight (and frequently fly down to Heathrow/Gatwick to pick up a nonstop)

If your dates a flexible a good site to try is www.cheapflights.co.uk which shows you offers without having to put dates in. Another one I use is dialaflight.co.uk but find that you need to call them really.

if the price is right , fly KLM/NWA via amsterdam and when u miss your connecting flight you get to have an unexpected night out in wild amsterdam, a 10euro meal voucher, plus u get to sleep in the airport on them lovely leather sunbed chair things.

the next day you get a flight to somewhere you didn%26#39;t expect to go to with an airline you didn;t book with (and NO free drinks!!!) then eventually get to your destination a day late to find that your car hire AND hotel has been cancelled due to being a no show.......

I%26#39;d go with a non -stop if it was easy to get to the airport. I do however use Newcastle and Durham Tees Valley frequently for connecting flights at Heathrow ( for 10 years now)and have only once arrived without my luggage--and that was due to plane changes because of storms and delays, our luggage arrived home 2 days later. I may well have been lucky but a connection in London is normal for me.

I can empathise with you! We did the Edinburgh-Amsterdam flight with KLM but it was delayed by an hour. Yes, we had to stay in one of the airport hotels. I had packed make-up, shampoo and GHD%26#39;s in my case (no you can%26#39;t get it back overnight)Had on really high boots (to match the stupidly small handbag!!)so was walking about the hotel in bare feet.

Following day, flew to Charles De Gaulle thinking our new carrier Air France were wonderful, I was able to extend my legs (34';inseam) for the 50 min flight. By contrast, when I sat down on the trans-atlantic flight I had to do my usual impression of a Swiss Army knife! No room for dental floss between my knees and the seat in front.

Best was yet to come, I got through immigration no probs (both hubby and I had our full screening done prev New Year at JFK)he get the %26#39;can you follow me Sir?%26#39; We were there for over two and a half hours along with a weird and wonderful assortment of characters.

When hubby showed the desk Sergent his warrant card to prove he was a police officer, he just said the guys who were %26#39;looking into the situation%26#39; were not the type to be rushed...we sat down! A combination of day late, wrong departure airport, wrong airline must have set of warning bells.

On subsequent flights to Chicago via Detroit we had %26#39;inconspicuous%26#39; air marshalls front %26amp; rear. We were treated to %26#39;special%26#39; treatment each time we checked in for another flight. Almost at the stage of ringing a bell and shouting %26#39;unclean%26#39; a la middle ages.

Think i%26#39;ll get him to apply for a visa in advance next time...

Ange, call me a pedant but how is taking a flight down to Heathrow to pick up a non-stop any different to flying to Amsterdam first?

Walking Distances in Brooklyn

We%26#39;re planning on spending a full day exploring Brooklyn during our trip coming up this Dec/Jan. We%26#39;re hoping you can answer a few simple questions:

- We%26#39;re not afraid of walking a lot, but are the areas of Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Prospect Heights close enough to walk to/from. We%26#39;ll probably catch the subway over and walk back via Brooklyn Bridge

- Are there any other areas we should see....that are walkable?

- I%26#39;ve always loved the view from the promenade when we see it in movies etc. is this easy to walk to?

You could walk that distance but it would be a longish walk down a very busy thoroughfare and not scenic.

I recommend either going to Brooklyn Heights and the promenade and then walking down to Smith Street in Cobble Hill for shops and restaurants which is walkable from Brooklyn Heights. Or Walk the bridge then take a subway to Park Slope (Grand Army Plaza 2/3 train) and then you can visit Prospect Park, the Slope, the Brooklyn Museum, the Botanic Garden very easily. Save your walking energy for the park or neighborhoods because they are lovely and charming and are enjoyable strolls.

Oh although I just noticed you are planning a winter visit. Well...the Museum might be a good place to warm up. The garden and park will be open at that time of year as well...just dress warmly and plan to drink lots of cocoa.

Walking Distances in Brooklyn

Thanks for the reply, its given me a much better idea of how far these places are to each other. What are the main streets in these areas for shopping, cafes etc?

If I may interject here:

I would take the 2 or 3 train to Eastern Pkwy/Brooklyn Museum stop. Upon exiting one of our most interesting subway stations you will be in front of the beautful Brooklyn Museum. Walk towards the right, past the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (both worth a visit) then continue straight, where you will pass the main branch of the Brooklyn Public LIbrary, Grand Army Plaza and Prospect Park. Walk to Prospect Park West for a few blocks, then make a left onto Montgomery Street, one of the most beautiful in all of Brooklyn. At the end of this 1 block street, make a right, then a left onto 7th Avenue, the main shopping drag of the area. Make a right and continue to Flatbush Avenue.

Cross Flatbush Avenue and get the bus to Brooklyn Heights, Montague Street. Walk the lenght of this stretch, lots of places to eat and neighborhood shops, and it will take you to the Promenade. Go right until you exit the promenade, continue downhill and you will hit Old Fulton Street. To the right you will see Grimaldi%26#39;s Pizza, to the left The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory %26amp; The River Cafe.

Continue down Water Street into Dumbo and have a look around Brooklyn Bridge Park. Exit at Washington Street and continue a few blocks, where you will see the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge, on the right, up a staircase, and then head back into Manhattan.

When you are walking on Washington Street make sure to get that money shot of the Empire State Building thru the Manhattan Bridge. Just walk into the middle of the street and take your shot.

You%26#39;ve even given me the subway stop! :-) Just a quick question on that as we%26#39;ll be catching the subway from our hotel in UWS directly to Brooklyn. Would the 2/3 train from W72 subway station take us all the way to the stop you mentioned, or do we swap trains anywhere?

P.S. My two travelling companions are also directionally challenged, don%26#39;t know uptown from downtown, turn right instead of left when leaving the hotel etc.
