NYC experts - what do you think of St Mark's Hotel

Hiya

Sohotel is not getting good wraps - so i am still looking for a budget hotel.

St Mark%26#39;s appeared on the radar and I was wondering what the locals thought of the area and its reputation.

its rated #125 on TA and overall the reviews are good, but i was wondering if the ';insiders'; thought the same. some of the reviews seem to be cut and pasted which is a bit dubious.

NYwhiz- this place has availability for a room with 2 double beds for the 7 nights, and a single room for the 4 nights the 3rd person is staying at a reasonable price. so it could be the answer to my issues if you experts think its ok.

thanks again

There used to be some unsavory characters that stayed at this hotel but I think as the area has gotten better, they have left. It%26#39;s very basic and if you read enough of the reviews, some complain of outside noise and there is no elevator in the building. But if you just want something basic, it does sound like a good solution.

I discovered yesterday when doing a search for someone else, the Comfort Inn Chelsea has at least 1 room with 3 single beds. It%26#39;s not the village, but Chelsea is a good, young area.

I can speak on this, since a friend of mine stayed there.

It used to be a flophouse. The rooms are now very clean, but very small. There%26#39;s nothing fancy there. However, there%26#39;s a bar/restaurant downstairs (not affiliated) and a really nice market across the street for snacks and pretty much anything you%26#39;d need. I would get a room not facing the street, as the area can be very noisy at night, especially during the summer. The area is smack-dab in the middle of the East Village, which is lively, filled with great food and colorful people. I would suggest staying there and having breakfast at Veselka, a Ukrainian coffeeshop about two short blocks away. Try the cheese blintzes! And if you love movies, stop in at Kim%26#39;s Video, right downstairs from the hotel. The store sells dvds from all regions- just ask. You%26#39;ll find some unusual stuff there.

If you want a quick cheap drink, go to The continental, which used to be a rock club and is now a bar. They offer 5 shots for $10, and have some of the cheapest drinks in town. You can rub elbows with college students there. Murray%26#39;s nearby has great cheese for snacks. And look into Saint%26#39;s Alp Teahouse for bubble tea and other things.

You can easily spend an entire vacation in the East village. However, you can also take the nearby N/R trains up to 42 St to make connections to other trains in the subway system. The hotel is also within a walking distance of Soho, Union Square (wonderful farmer%26#39;s market 4 days a week) and the West Village. The Washington Square Arch and Park are a few blocks away.

On the other hand, most locals (like myself) never or rarely use hotels. So check the reviews (on left side of this page) or enter ';St. Marks Hotel'; in search box and see what comes up!

thanks nywhiz - i will check the comfort inn at chelsea, you are truly a wealth of info. thanks for responding to my posts, i have looked up every hotel u suggested and spoke to a lot of night managers at 3am NYC time!

thanks madamesmartypants - you are making me want to book it immediately! the area sounds fantastic.

queensboulevard - i do realise there is a search box, and had you read my whole post, i had mentioned that i have read the reviews and trawled thru the forum. i was asking the ';experts/insiders'; as i had mentioned the sohotel previously and had many people who were local experts telling me not to go there, so i was merely doing the same for st mark%26#39;s. and yes, i know that being locals, you don%26#39;t frequent hotels in manhattan, but other local experts seem to know a lot about different hotels in different localities, so i didn%26#39;t think there was any harm in asking. thanks for your advice though.
